As I have mentioned previously in several articles it is often difficult to decide on what to write about and, often as not, some birding event occurs that conveniently provides me with a topic for the week. So it happened for this article. One look through binoculars and we quickly realized that it was an owl, but what kind? I frantically took a series of pictures which turned out quite sharp considering the time of day and the heavily overcast skies. See article No. 132).

Foam Lake Birding No. 162. After a week of dreary weather the sun has finally come out. None too soon for my tastes. If nothing else, the bright sun lets me get much better photos of birds. During the week of interminable clouds and snow our bird feeders were the site of continual feeding frenzy. Even Pine Grosbeaks which are usually hesitant to come to our feeders were competing for seeds with a horde of House Sparrows. Foam Lake Birding No. 187. After a much longer hiatus than I had intended I am finally back at it. However my articles will not be a regular as in the past. Health issues will do that to a fellow. Compared to last winter birding this year has been rather poor. Yes, we do have the standard chickadees, sparrows, woodpeckers and a few Bohemian Waxwings but noticeably absent are the nuthatches, redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks. Hopefully, things pick up soon. It is nice to have this bird back again this year.

Foam Lake Birding No. 190. Wrens and Tree Swallows notwithstanding The bird most sought after by residents of both towns and farms alike is the Purple Martin. It is one of the few birds that nests in colonies which endears it to people. See Article No. 9). Although Purple Martins used to nest singly (in pairs) in abandoned woodpecker holes they do like to nest in colonies if at all possible. Modern man has substantially improvised on the quality and quantity of housing available for the Purple Martin.
