Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Employers Discouraged from Hiring Disabled: Survey. There are some encouraging findings in a new survey on hiring the disabled. The survey was commissioned by the Job Opportunity Information Network and contacted more than 100 human resource executives. It suggests that many employers have concerns when hiring someone with a disability. However, 53 per cent of the respondents also said people with disabilities would bring a fresh perspective to the workplace.

Anxiety about having to fire an underperforming employee with a disability is the number one reason employers shy away from such hires, a survey of Canadian employers finds. Other reasons that employers cited for shying away from individuals with disabilities included the cost of hiring such employees, worries about higher rates of absenteeism and employer expectations that such hires would need more training.

Employers anxious about hiring people with disabilities, but see their value. 8212; While most employers see people living with disabilities as valuable assets to the workplace, anxieties over job accommodation or firing workers discourage some from hiring them, a new study suggests. Among respondents, 36 per cent say they were discouraged from hiring a person with a disability out of concern that it would be harder to dismiss a person with a disability than someone without one.
