Wednesday, February 09, 2005. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A diet rich in fiber and vegetables lowered cholesterol just as much as taking a statin drug, Canadian researchers reported Monday. They said people who cannot tolerate the statin drugs because of side-effects can turn to the diet, which they said their volunteers could easily follow. On to my whinge: They are recommending eating a healthy diet "for people who cannot tolerate the statin drugs or side-effects"? That is exactly backwards. The invasiv...

Thursday, April 02, 2009. Hey, it's a whinge about the Republican party. All secondhand, derived information from other, more interesting folks. Yet I post it all here, because I feel frustrated. Enjoy - or don't read. After demonizing their opponents for so long, too much of the GOP leadership can't remember that there is a line of decency that can't be crossed even if it will win a few dozen votes. Thus, the ambassador to North Korea, phenomenally well-qualified, appointed by Bush five years ago to acc...

Friday, August 19, 2005. Intelligent Design for an unintelligent future. Our president and our senate majority leader both think we should teach intelligent design as a competing theory to evolution in public school science classes. They posit that schools are a marketplace of ideas, so having more theories on the table does not constitute a state endorsement of religion, nor does it require kids to believe. Are they hoarding it for themselves? I'm starting to develop the theory (a term I use with as muc...

Friday, January 28, 2005. More thoughts on Writers of the Future. In my first incarnation as a writer (early nineties), I submitted to Algis Budrys a few times. It was quite a nice experience to find myself actually appearing in a forum he edited. One of my recent regrets is that I will (most likely) never be published by Gardner Dozois. Another hero cleverly retires, thus escaping my aspirations. That question's out of my league as a theologian.). Posted by jonathan @ 10:56 PM. Best Clarion Page Ever.

Monday, December 08, 2008. It starts to feel like time is running out. That sounds morbid, but it isn't. As parents, we too often feel we can put ourselves aside for the good of the children. It's exactly the wrong thing to do, which doesn't make anything else make any more sense. But the office would be better served by more, better employee selfishness as well. There's a balance of course. There's a balance of course! Posted by jonathan @ 9:25 PM. The company where I interned. Best Clarion Page Ever.

Monday, July 28, 2003. The movie was a critical and popular success, I know. It won't be the first time I missed something really powerful. We all do. Clue me in. I'll forever be in your debt (even if I continue to disagree). Posted by jonathan @ 2:16 AM. Monday, July 21, 2003. Some random thoughts upon the end of Clarion 2003:. I'll confess it openly. I did (do) dream of breakthroughs - those eureka moments that come when least expected after long, dedicated toil. That's the point, of course: th...If yo...
