Party in the PC(USA). Adventures of a Young Adult Volunteer in Hollywood, CA. As I was cooking/washing dishes the other night, my music from my iPhone was on shuffle. A song, by Jake Ousley, that I hadn’t listened to in a while came on and it goes well with this post. Click here. To listen to it while you read on. All everyone seems to ask us Dwellers these days is the dreaded question – “What’s next? When else will I get the chance to live in Hollywood, California? I get to be home for a couple of weeks...

https://jordanakin.wordpress.com/2015/09/03/home
Party in the PC(USA). Adventures of a Young Adult Volunteer in Hollywood, CA. Monday, I left Little Rock. Yesterday, I arrived in Asheville. I was home for nearly 3 weeks. It was the first time I had been home since Christmas. That was the longest I had ever gone without a trip home…8 whole months. No one in Little Rock understood what I went through in L.A. My housemates understood. I wanted them back. And as I left for Asheville, I was sad. I did not want to say bye to my parents. I did not wan...And n...

Party in the PC(USA). Adventures of a Young Adult Volunteer in Hollywood, CA. First of all, I apologize for not writing a blog post since January. Nearly 5 months later, here is a new one. As you read, listen to this song by John Mayer. Secondly, in April, I started a new part time work placement. I still work at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. But I am also an “intern” at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church (BMPC)! Third, after this YAV year, I will be attending Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary!

Party in the PC(USA). Adventures of a Young Adult Volunteer in Hollywood, CA. Let Your Light Shine. That night we also discussed white privilege and how that would affect our group’s experience. The last thought we talked about was how this church grieved. How can you grieve together as a community if other people were constantly coming to every church function? This was an incredible and amazing opportunity; one that I will never forget. January 22, 2016. Being in the Wilderness. Enter your comment here.
Serving Others – Party in the PC(USA)

Party in the PC(USA). Adventures of a Young Adult Volunteer in Hollywood, CA. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Ghandi. I have posted a video above for you to watch if you would like to. It goes along with this post. Why does it take a catastrophic event to make people work together? Desmond Tutu states “When we have actually served others, we discover a deep contentment.” I definitely felt some happiness while watching that video. Would we have more compassio...

My year in Asheville, NC as a Young Adult Volunteer. First day on the job with AAHH. September 3, 2015. Today was my first day at Area Asheville Habitat for Humanity! And it was amazing. Let me set the scene,. My awesome roommate Jordan agreed to drive me to the office this morning. Knowing that I had to be there at 8:30, and that it was a 13 minute drive according to Google maps, we left at 8:10, plenty of time to spare and get lost, right? Orientation at Stony Point Center aka the best week ever. Winte...

My year in Asheville, NC as a Young Adult Volunteer. Orientation at Stony Point Center aka the best week ever. September 3, 2015. This past week 85 YAVs, 10 YAVA (YAV alumni) and 5 members of the YAV staff congregated at Stony Point Center in Stony Point, NY for an incredible orientation. Before this week I had no idea what was in store for us at orientation but upon my arrival, I quickly realized how amazing and transforming this event would be for myself. February | 2016 | Venturing South
https://emilystevensyav.wordpress.com/2016/02
My year in Asheville, NC as a Young Adult Volunteer. Winter in the South. February 13, 2016. February 13, 2016. Back in Rochester, February is one of the coldest months of the year. In high school I remember getting a snow day on Valentines day and trampling through knee high snow to get to my friends house. In Asheville, you get a foot of snow one weekend and 65 degree weather the next. If you don’t call this climate change than I don’t know what is. Note Caitlyn’s car on the right…. This was their thir...

My year in Asheville, NC as a Young Adult Volunteer. 8220;I’m not homeless, I live on the Earth”. March 23, 2016. March’s stipend was the lowest we have received to date. $240.38. And the month of March has 5 weeks this year. Ouch This one’s going to be rough. 6 days in, I had $12.00 in my bank account. Our Poverty Scholar’s words stuck with me as we left reflection that day: Aren’t we all just human beings on planet Earth? One home and one planet that we need for our survival? Happy reading y’all! I con...

13 Years and Counting: My Senior Tennis Season
13 Years and Counting: My Senior Tennis Season. April 21, 2015. Retired. That’s what I am. I’m officially a Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis Alum. No more emails, team meetings, afternoon practices and ice baths, nada. I have no more obligations to GSU athletics. Weird. The thought of completing four years of college tennis passed incredibly quickly, and I cannot fathom that it’s all over. On the Road “One More Time”. April 15, 2015. Beaches or Bleachers – Avid fan of sports, warm weather & all things social media
Avid fan of sports, warm weather and all things social media. May 9, 2016. A new chapter began 365 days ago. Or that’s what I was told, at least. Graduation. A farewell to friends. A goodbye instead of a see you later. The real world. It’s been 365 days since my new chapter began, and I have learned a thing or two. 365 days, or 52 weeks, going on 53. I could make a list of a lesson-a-week, but you’d close your browser now, so I’ll spare you. I may be bias, but a workout in the morning before work can mak...
