Excursions of the mind. On books, history, movies, music, science, travel. Wednesday, February 05, 2003. First notes for 639-year composition. The first notes in the longest and slowest piece of music in history, designed to go on for 639 years, are being played on a German church organ on Wednesday. The three notes, which will last for a year-and-a-half, are just the start of the piece, called As Slow As Possible. They settled on 639 years because the Halberstadt organ was 639 years old in the year 2000.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Sunday, August 29, 2004. Io son giá stanco di pensar sí come. I miei pensier in voi stanchi non sono,. E come vita ancor non abbandono. Per fuggir de' sospir sí gravi some;. E come a dir del viso e de le chiome. E de' begli occhi, ond'io sempre ragiono,. Non è mancata omai la lingua e 'l suono. Di e notte chiamando il vostro nome;. E che ' pie' miei non son fiaccati e lassi. A seguir l'orme vostre in ogni parte,. Perdendo inutilmente tanti passi;. And with old woes new w...

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Sunday, February 12, 2006. XLII That thou hast her it is not all my grief,. That thou hast her it is not all my grief,. And yet it may be said I loved her dearly;. That she hath thee is of my wailing chief,. A loss in love that touches me more nearly. Loving offenders thus I will excuse ye:. Thou dost love her, because thou know'st I love her;. And for my sake even so doth she abuse me,. Suffering my friend for my sake to approve her. Then she loves but me alone.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Thursday, September 30, 2004. CXIX What potions have I drunk of Siren tears,. What potions have I drunk of Siren tears,. Distilled from limbecks foul as hell within,. Applying fears to hopes, and hopes to fears,. Still losing when I saw myself to win! What wretched errors hath my heart committed,. Whilst it hath thought itself so blessed never! How have mine eyes out of their spheres been fitted,. In the distraction of this madding fever! O benefit of ill! Now I find true.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Monday, July 26, 2004. XLIV If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,. If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,. Injurious distance should not stop my way;. For then despite of space I would be brought,. From limits far remote, where thou dost stay. No matter then although my foot did stand. Upon the farthest earth remov'd from thee;. For nimble thought can jump both sea and land,. As soon as think the place where he would be. Posted by Jorielle at 3:27:00 PM.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Saturday, March 26, 2005. XXXI Thy bosom is endeared with all hearts,. Thy bosom is endeared with all hearts,. Which I by lacking have supposed dead;. And there reigns Love, and all Love's loving parts,. And all those friends which I thought buried. How many a holy and obsequious tear. Hath dear religious love stol'n from mine eye,. As interest of the dead, which now appear. But things remov'd that hidden in thee lie! Thou art the grave where buried love doth live,.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Saturday, October 30, 2004. CXXIV If my dear love were but the child of state,. If my dear love were but the child of state,. It might for Fortune's bastard be unfathered,. As subject to Time's love or to Time's hate,. Weeds among weeds, or flowers with flowers gathered. No, it was builded far from accident;. It suffers not in smiling pomp, nor falls. Under the blow of thralled discontent,. Whereto th' inviting time our fashion calls:. It fears not policy, that heretic,.

The Sonnets (mostly Shakespeare). Saturday, January 29, 2005. XCIV They that have power to hurt, and will do none,. They that have power to hurt, and will do none,. That do not do the thing they most do show,. Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,. Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow;. They rightly do inherit heaven's graces,. And husband nature's riches from expense;. They are the lords and owners of their faces,. Others, but stewards of their excellence. Though to itself, it only live and die,.
