About | Technocracy
https://joshcowling.wordpress.com/about
Games, science and other diversions…. My name is Josh Cowling, and I’m a PhD student at the university of Durham in the UK. My research revolves around coherent diffractive optical systems for lithography. More specifically algorithms and methods for the design of holograms. Less specifically: we want to make computer chip manufacture technology 3D. I’m going to start using this Blog to document all my stupid projects and half baked ideas. I hope you find some of them interesting! Enter your comment here.
ScribTeX | Technocracy
https://joshcowling.wordpress.com/2011/12/02/scribtex
Games, science and other diversions…. So I would like to introduce people to ScribTeX. ScribTeX is an on-line editing and publishing tool built on top of LaTeX which is a typesetting language used for scientific publications because of its amazing support for technical and mathematical content. It is also used in the publishing industry for books, and by anyone who wants to look like a proper geek by formatting their CV (Also sometimes by masochistic people who want to make posters). If you like what you...
Leedshack 2012 – This time its algorithmical | Technocracy
https://joshcowling.wordpress.com/2013/04/18/leedshack-2012-this-time-its-algorithmical
Games, science and other diversions…. Leedshack 2012 – This time its algorithmical. We re-attended Leedshack this year with some idea that the scope of our project should be manageable. Then decided to completely ignore this fact and attempt something mad. Actually that’s not quite true, we knew we probably wouldn’t be able to optimally solve the problem that we came with, but we had a good idea that we would be able to make something that might minimally work. Leeds Hack 2011 | Technocracy
https://joshcowling.wordpress.com/2011/08/09/leedshack2011
Games, science and other diversions…. Having just about regained my sanity from the serious sleep deprivation incurred from a weekend of coding, I have decided to start a little blog and writeup what we managed to achieve in 24 hours. I learned a lot more than I was expecting to. With a team like this, what could possibly go wrong. Its hard to believe that something so polished can be produced in 24 hours. The full list of hacks can be viewed here. Check out some images of me and the guys testing and pre...

Eat my cake: Eat my cakeing Birthday Cake!
http://eatmycakeingcake.blogspot.com/2011/12/eat-my-cakeing-birthday-cake.html
Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Sunday, 4 December 2011. Eat my cakeing Birthday Cake! On the 18th of November it was my lovely (but very hyper) friend's 23rd birthday. Seeing as she made me a delicious praline chocolate cake for my 23rd and. A giant blue cookie, it seemed only right that i baked her a cake in return. Http:/ www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/5819/white-and-dark-chocolate-cake. Taste wise, I prefer my signature chocolate fudge cake, it ...

Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Monday, 13 August 2012. This cake contains your monthly calorie allowance (probably). On Saturday my good friend George came to visit. It was the first time we had seen each other for two and a half years. Such occasions I decided, deserve a cake. A really yummy and fattening cake. After flicking through my recipe cook entitled 'Chocolate', I settled on the White Chocolate Truffle Cake. 250g of mascarpone cheese.
Eat my cake: September 2011

Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Sunday, 4 September 2011. For Christmas I got a sewing machine. I had wanted one for ages, but shamefully until now all I have produced from it are three cushion covers. I used some scarves that I bought with the intention of wearing like this (minus the rollers and wrinkles). Once this project is completed, the boyfriend wants me to make a binary duvet cover. I'll explain that when it gets its own post :P. Post-ro...
Eat my cake: Pretty Cupcakes Test 1.

Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Wednesday, 8 February 2012. Pretty Cupcakes Test 1. Previous attempts at decorating my cupcakes have always ended pretty poorly and for this I have always blamed not having a wide enough nozzle to pipe with. You can see here that the lines are not defined and it's all a red splodgy mess. I don't think they are a terrible first attempt, they certainly taste good. But I have learnt a few things. Watch what you say to...
Eat my cake: April 2012

Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Monday, 16 April 2012. On Saturday the house of MoshJohn had a joint birthday party. Because we are brilliant hosts John and I baked. John made lovely scones and I made cupcakes. I was initially going to make thirtysomething sweet cupcakes but because our lovely friend Elise made us a 5 TIER CHOCOLATE/PRALINE/ALMOND CAKE! I decided to try making savoury cupcakes to even out the sugar to savoury ratio. I learnt from...

Eat my cake: December 2011
http://eatmycakeingcake.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Trying out new things in an effort to be a less lazy and generally a more creative person. Friday, 30 December 2011. I've wanted to make this cake for ages, but Josh has never seemed keen when i've suggested it in the past as he prefers the chocolatey variety, but when our lovely F1s (what the hell is one of them? At work finished their stint with us, it was a great excuse to bake it for them to say goodbye and thanks for not being crap to work with. Line/grease a springform tin. Preheat oven to 170.
