A PhD's Life. My life as an Assistant Professor…. I know that when I coordinate my course (next Spring) I will be using scantrons for all of my exams! I can’t handle another exam like this morning. After that experience, I can really use a break. Too bad I’m 12-month faculty…no Spring Break for me. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. A PhD's Life. My life as an Assistant Professor…. MY SEMESTER IS OVER! Not only that, but I gotta very nice 4% pay increase! I honestly cannot say enough about how much I love my job. It is the perfect job for me in every way. It is in the perfect location. It has the perfect balance between teaching and research (for me). I have great colleagues and great bosses. I sit here at my computer with PowerPoint open, surrounded by textbooks, but I can’t seem to make myself transfer the information from the written page to digital screen. I know that I will be able to stay in my current lab only until the end of the year. 1) Wait to hear if my fancy K award is likely to be funded (followed by groveling as I scrounge up a way to keep eating until the checks arrive. 2) Apply for another, less cool K award. Work surprises, at least in my limited experience, are not good. Here's my latest example:. Sitting in a meeting with my boss, I'm asked "so, does the lab know you're leaving at the end of the month? May have been a direct lightening strike, but I'm not sure how I'd know since there weren't any scorch marks on the house. And yes, I checked. Dr Dad, PhD. Friday, February 17, 2012. Importance of a second postdoc for tt? Alright. I'm conflicted and confused and going to turn to whoever is listening for guidance. How important is a 2nd postdoc to securing a tenure-track research position? The only problem is that I want to be a professor. I love research, mentoring, and teaching. Yeah, committee service sucks, but I can deal with it. Why won't someone just give me a chance? Maybe if I change my name to Jeremy Lin I'll get a chance to shine.
