This is a placeholder for the blog. I'll be switching this out soon for an actual blog page and as I have time I'll be reposting the old blog entries from the previous incarnation of slowhandfarm.com. As I have time. Alongside that old content I'll be putting up new posts, and noting any other additions to the photos, q&a, reviews and links. Other places you can find me.

These are websites and resources I use that are farm related. This is definitely an abbreviated list. If there are sites that should be listed here let me know and I’ll add them. Please also let me know. If you find a link that is no longer active. Thanks. Sells great japanese hand tools. I’ve used their hoes, sickles, and hand weeders and have loved them all. There is some less expensive stuff, but the higher quality tools are a joy to work with. In Columbus Grove, Ohio, makes bed shapers, mulch layers ...

Here are links to some reviews of equipment I’ve used, or tried, or maybe some notes on things that look interesting to me. (The most recent reviews are of bike gear, but it has farm applications, and I'm also using a bike for farm deliveries so that's why it's on my mind). The Bullitt One Year Later. BikeMount iPhone case and mount. April 2012 (updated June 2013). Motorola S10-HD Bluetooth Headset. April 2012 (updated March 2013). Other places you can find me.

A little bit from the world of farming, food and everything else. February 26, 2016. Comments Off on Mentors. Farmers at the 14th Annual Northwest Vegetable Farmer to Farmer Exchange. In January I somehow came across a Facebook post from Steve House, a well known Alpinist and Patagonia climbing ambassador. I learned that experience in the mountains is a way of seeing. A way of knowing. And gaining that experience is painstakingly slow UNLESS someone shares their intuition, their judgement with you. IR...

Growing radicchio the Italian Way. How to mark beds quickly and accurately for planting. How to use plastic to control winter weeds in asparagus. How to grow strawberries on weed cloth. How to calculate water needs for a given area. Handling pests organically on a garden scale. How to make wooden boxes for CSA shares. How to sharpen tools. Is Josh Volk. I've been working with small growers, consulting, teaching, writing articles, building tools and trying to help out under the name Slow Hand Farm since 2008. Check the following pages of this website for more details. I've gotten pretty busy recently, but I try to answer as many requests as possible. For the 2016 season I'm finally getting back to urban agriculture, what I started with 20 years ago. This season I'm working with my friend Matt at Cully Neighborhood Farm.

Urban Homesteading in the Pacific Northwest. Terraces are in and look amazing! Terraces tilled by husband with borrowed tractor…. Beds built by hand and amended with compost….a bcs with a rotary hoe would make this go much faster. Beds limed, amended with micronutrients and shaped. First beds planted and irrigation lines in place-wait, what is that in the distance? Hmmm, think I know what the next big project is…. And a new wildflower discovery-I think this is an orchid called Candystick. May 6, 2015.

Urban Homesteading in the Pacific Northwest. So far, so good…. Heading into week 4 for the CSA, week 2 for the Farmers Market (on the fence there-I’ll know by tomorrow if I have enough veg for both). The weather has been all over the place-into the 90’s this week which is unusual for W. Oregon in early June-normal cool and rainy last week (Rose Festival-of course! Here are some shots of a recent CSA share….just to get you going😉. Square Peg Farm strawberries. This entry was posted in farming. Big Table ...

Urban Homesteading in the Pacific Northwest. This week in pictures. Love this time of year-though today starts a heat wave. Not so in love with this new world order…I expect to spend the next two days working in the cool of the early morning as long as I can, and then hiding from the sun except for moving irrigation. Be safe, stay hydrated! Elk fence on main garden! Calendula with bad guy. Terraces for the orchard. This entry was posted in farming. And tagged animal husbandry. June 26, 2015. You are comm...

Urban Homesteading in the Pacific Northwest. Wannabe farmer, urban homesteader, small town girl itchin to move out of the city. Early season projects…. We skinned that cat, and now snug on the inside is a seed starting extravaganza-complete with heat mats, tables, a propagation sweatbox, a seeding table, and early garden beds out of the weather. Spring break for farmers-it was 80 degrees in here the other day…. It is all fun and games until the field voles find you…. This entry was posted in farming.

We're Deirdre and Phil Armstrong of Harvest Thyme Herbs, a small, diversified 6- acre farm nestled in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Here we grow our herbs and vegetables for discriminating chefs and gourmet markets in Staunton and Charlottesville. These chefs and small business owners have made a commitment to source their foods from small local growers such as ourselves. We feel privileged to grow for them. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. 2014 Delegates
http://slowfoodportland.com/terra-madre/2014-delegates
Good, Clean & Fair. Eleven delegates will represent Oregon at 2014 Terra Madre, with eight from our Portland area and three hailing from Eugene and Corvallis. We asked each of them a few questions so you can get to know them a little better. They bring unique, yet overlapping, interests, passions, skills and concerns to the food table. We congratulate them and wish them well on their exciting journey both to Italy and beyond. Don’t miss our July 26 fundraiser! How are you involved in the food community?

About
Thank you for visiting my site. Some parts are still under construction. Please excuse my changes till the site is fully updated. I enjoy doing portrait shoots using backgrounds that enhance the personality of the people I am capturing. While I do have access to a studio setting with a few formal backdrops and special lighting, I prefer being in a space that is close to the heart of the person or family I am capturing. Everyone has seen old family photos from a time before digital cameras and the ability...
