Journeying: Pearl's Blog

Saturday, February 20, 2010. Violence and the Church. I just finished watching James Carroll’s “Constantine’s Sword” in class, a film by Oren Jacobs. It punches you in the gut with a treatise on the atrocity of the Christian church’s endorsement of hatred and violence through the years. As it neared ending, I could feel the tears burning the back of my eyes, and my stomach lurched. I’m tired from carrying the weight of this knowledge. Journeying: Pearl's Blog: August 2009

http://www.journeyingpearl.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 18, 2009. I had the coolest moment today. I talked to a guy on the phone today. He's interested in volunteering where I work, at Water Street Ministries. Water Street's vision is transformed lives as they work with the poor and homeless in our area. His daughter is one of the employees here, and he wants to support this. Here's the only thing. He's deaf. How awesome is that! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. The love of my life.

Journeying: Pearl's Blog: April 2009

http://www.journeyingpearl.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Spring seems to have finally arrived! Now the colors have multiplied. Dogwoods aren't blooming yet, but are pushing purple buds out, giving the treeline a hint of life. Redbuds are in full force. Cherry and tulip trees are full of purples and pinks. Fields are bright with new grass. White blossoms fill bushes along neighborhood streets. As the sun shines warmer, the days last longer, and the smells of life fill the air, I remember why this is one of my favorite times of year.

Saturday, June 27, 2009. How Do You Stay Sane? As you all have seen in my silence over the last few months, life is crazy right now. Being in school is an amazing thing but also has a way of sucking you into a giant black hole. ☺ Each day, I have to make choices about priorities. What relationship do I need to invest in? What homework must be done? What task at home is pressing? What is the next step for the launch of Pearl Street Photography? I would love to learn from you! Links to this post. So this s...

Journeying: Pearl's Blog: Sacred Moments in a Rec Room

http://www.journeyingpearl.blogspot.com/2009/11/sacred-moments-in-rec-room.html

Monday, November 30, 2009. Sacred Moments in a Rec Room. Heaven comes on earth everyday, but we don’t always notice it. I dare you to watch for it though. One of these moments snuck up on me the other day. Much of our conversation ended up centering around the larger issues our churches often miss—issues of prejudice, poverty, and violence. At one point, someone named Albert courageously opened his heart to ask “are the [white] people in this room on our [minority] side? It was a sacred moment. Thank you...

Tomorrow's Church: God the Father? Pt. 1

http://tomorrowschurch.blogspot.com/2009/01/god-father-pt-1.html

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. Thursday, January 29, 2009. Posted by Mike McGarvey. Over the last couple of days I've been reading through a book by Donald Miller. Titled " To Own A Dragon: Reflections on growing up without a Father. Donald Miller is one of my favorite authors because of his raw honesty. And I enjoy the wit. That he adds to his writing. I was actually looking for one of his other books, " Through Painted Deserts. That He is a father. I started thinking about the wisdom.

Tomorrow's Church: The Next Evangelicalism

http://tomorrowschurch.blogspot.com/2009/05/next-evangelicalism.html

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. Wednesday, May 20, 2009. I loved this clip - it is a cool opportunity to sit in on a conversation with some great Asian-American Christian thinkers and leaders. Soong Chan had some really cool thoughts to challenge us with, in particular realizing how captive our thinking, our theology and our churches are to Western thought. I'm definitely adding this to my "to-read" list. Interview: Soong Chan Rah. I am SO intrigued. Thanks for sharing. To you, Pops.

Tomorrow's Church: The Shaking of All Things

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. The Shaking of All Things. Thursday, May 7, 2009. This is are really good interview with Mike Breen and Eddie Gibbs - you can watch the rest over on ShapeVine. It has some really good metaphor's for what is happening around us and a lot of thought to chew on afterward. Let me know what you think. May 7, 2009 at 12:37 PM. Ali - word. I love my church community and they do a lot to be "outside" the building - but I think we still have a long way to go.

Tomorrow's Church: An Important Distinction

http://tomorrowschurch.blogspot.com/2009/02/important-distinction.html

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. Monday, February 2, 2009. This struck me as I'm trying to finish The Forgotten Ways. And what a task it has been. I feel like Jacob and I've been wrestling this book forever - but it has been good. So instead of saying it my way, I'll just quote Mr Hirsch. Our problem, it seems, is that we too quickly identify the concrete-historical expressions of church as the body of Christ. And while there is a truth to this, for the church is the body of Christ,.

Tomorrow's Church: Interview with author Ron Martoia [Part 2]

http://tomorrowschurch.blogspot.com/2009/03/interview-with-author-ron-martoia-part_06.html

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. Interview with author Ron Martoia [Part 2]. Friday, March 6, 2009. 5 I found in a simple google search a number of overly-demonizing critiques of your work. How do we work to be the change in our church communities and handle the often 'demonizing' accusations of those who disagree? Well you are apparently the careful reader (lol)! 7 If you were asked to boil the whole of Scripture down to its most basic elements, what would those be? We are imago dei crea...

Dreaming about what could be and what should be. Interview with author Ron Martoia [Part 1]. Thursday, March 5, 2009. I recently got the opportunity to send some questions to Ron Martoia. For the benefit of all the readers of Tomorrow's Church. Ron has written a number of books and articles, but his most recent, Transformational Architecture. 1 Ron, what has God been speaking to you about lately? The Christian voice exercised in the Democratic process seems to only play to our disadvantage. I think m...

Journeying On | …making much of Christ along the way.

8230;making much of Christ along the way. About Trenton and Deering. December 14, 2012. A good word from a good friend…. Why are Christians Afraid To Witness? February 1, 2009. Why are we so intimidated when it comes to sharing the Gospel? Are we afraid that it will ruin friendships? Are we afraid we might get asked a question and not have the answer? Are we afraid of the moniker of “Jesus Freak”? Were you as surprised as me? So I ask the question again… Why are we so reluctant to witness to people?

Saturday, March 24, 2018. But What About the Joneses? Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Luke 12:15 NLT. There is a song I hear on the radio, while driving to and from work, that has pierced my heart. The song is “I Want to Go Back” by David Dunn. What has always stood out to me about the song is this one particular statement:. When I was a kid,. I didn’t care to keep up with the Joneses;. I was just happy that they lived next door. This n...

Journeyings

Thursday, August 13, 2015. We are serving as missionaries in the Ghana Missionary Training Center (MTC) and are busy every day. However, the MTC had to close for maintenance last July so we got permission to take a trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe. It was the perfect break! Here's a peek at our experiences in South Africa. So many friends have asked about the details - that I thought a fairly lengthy blog post is in order. July 7 Tuesday - depart Accra. July 10 Friday - fly through Johannesburg to Hoeds...
