Saturday, April 26, 2014. Review: First French Essais: Venturing into Writing, Marriage, and France. I have subscribed to and enjoyed Kristin’s blog for several years. As an American, I like discovering differences in French culture (like doggy bags and parking meters) along with Kristin. I like learning handy French words and expressions (like la bagnole. For car) that often don’t show up in textbooks or even dictionaries. I believe First French Essais. Means the mother-in-law at least. Is an enjoyable ...

Friday, March 13, 2015. Reviews of two Iris Murdoch books. My bow to Saint Patrick's Day this year was to read Iris Murdoch, whom I'd never read. I still may don green. On March 17 and savor a Shamrock Shake. But I'm also glad to be more familiar with this Irish author. Although hardbound with woodcut illustrations, Something Special. I enjoyed the way Murdoch revealed so much with dialogue. And I think most readers could identify with Yvonne’s dilemma. Iris Murdoch’s suspenseful novel, The Bell. Shows s...

Saturday, February 28, 2015. Book review, The Noticer. If you’re looking for a small dose of timeless wisdom loosely fashioned into a story, you might enjoy The Noticer. In some cases, the rejuvenating perspective comes from illuminating the universality of obstacles. In other cases, Jones shares the benefits of compassion and a long view of integrity. Sometimes he asks, What if you did this instead of that? To enjoy The Noticer. Thursday, February 19, 2015. Recently, our bible study facilitator finished...

Tuesday, May 27, 2014. This morning I was in Paris . But what I most. Want to remember in my I was in Paris this morning. Dream is my French friend who spent frustrating hours of her vacation trying in vain to schedule a taxi for me; the many helpful security and hospitality personnel at train stations and the airport; and the friendly Americans on the plane who told their Paris horror stories with humor and c’est la vie. Yesterday I was in Paris. Labels: Charles De Gaulle Airport. Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

Thursday, October 10, 2013. Edith Wharton's Home, The Mount. Edith Wharton did not write happy endings. Her stories feature the lost chance; her characters yearn for someone to join them in that innermost room of the soul. Whether Wharton achieved that in her own life, and with whom, is a story as mysterious and captivating as any of her fiction. From a sign inside The Mount, Edith Wharton’s home from 1902 to 1911]. And The Age of Innocence. Innermost room of the soul. World War I refugee hostels. US cam...
