In Front of Them All. Bridge of No Return. Until 1976, there was complete freedom of movement by all sides with the limits of the JSA. After the Axe murders of August 18, 1976 and subsequent Operation Paul Bunyan, the Joint Security Area became divided, separated by a concrete threshold approximately 17″ X 5″ which represents the border between North and South Korea. In Front of Them All. Bridge of No Return. Operation Paul Bunyan: 6-month announcement. This year marks the 40th year since the Panmunjom Axe-murders (18 AUG 76) followed 3 days later by Operation Paul Bunyan (21 AUG 76). One of the men killed on 18 AUG 76, 1LT Mark T. Barrett, is buried in Columbia, SC not far from Ft Jackson. I have visited his grave several times. There will be more announcements and plans as the date draws closer. Until then, Sunday, August 21, 2016 is exactly 40 years.
