Overall, it’s not quite what I expected, what with not all of my seedlings surviving and some of them being too small to plant yet (namely the tomatoes), but with the new seedlings coming in and the other plants thriving I’m feeling very optimistic. There’s nothing like the end of the school year to spur a few months of activity and an attempt to do all of the things one never gets around to doing. In keeping with that, I guess it’s time to make this blog active again. A rewrite of Copycat. A really interesting artificial intelligence model. A translation of L’Étranger, by Albert Camus. A sweet garden that I’m growing at least partly, but hopefully mostly, from seed.

Ramblings by John Schaeffer. May 16, 2011. A few words on plants. There’s something really relaxing and fascinating about growing plants. So much goes into the process: it’s the sort of thing that really makes me feel humble when I think about it. To think a single seed can just be thrown into some relatively homogeneous organic medium and grow to thousands of times its size, based only on a string of interpretable nucleotides wrapped around themselves, is pretty mind-blowing.
