Musicology (Most of the Time): Best Music Singles of 2010--sort of
http://judybradymostlymusicology.blogspot.com/2010/12/best-music-singles-of-2010-sort-of.html
Musicology (Most of the Time). Music as it is in life as it is in music as it is in. Saturday, January 1, 2011. Best Music Singles of 2010- sort of. Many lists I've read use the "Best 10 of 10" model probably due to our natural penchant for numbers that match and logistical tidiness like decades, Januarys and whatnot. Hhuummph. I tried for 10 songs released as singles during 2010 that positively altered my musical reality, and I think I've revealed to myself that I am not hip. This song has an easy-breez...

Musicology (Most of the Time). Music as it is in life as it is in music as it is in. Monday, January 25, 2010. The challenge today is daunting. I already said that I have to revise my Diss Proposal, but I can actually do that in the evening after "24" is over (love that show! I have three classes this semester (whoo- hoo! So, here I go again! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Need a good read? Topophilia" by Yi-Fu Tuan. Against the Day" by Thomas Pynchon. Spaces of Hope" by David Harvey.
Musicology (Most of the Time): first day of "spring".....

Musicology (Most of the Time). Music as it is in life as it is in music as it is in. Tuesday, January 26, 2010. First day of "spring". I have 18 enrolled in my "Music of the 1960s" class. The enrollment has some restrictions on it for students, so the smaller number is expected and good, since it's the first time I'm teaching it (and I'm creating it, too). My Monster class (MUS 115) is at 100, and this morning I had the 25th student request to force-add since the class is full. Mon dieu! And, Romanticism...

Musicology (Most of the Time). Music as it is in life as it is in music as it is in. Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Here I go again on my own.". What has added an extra week of non-writing and heavy-gardening to my calendar is figuring out WHAT THE HOLY HELL MY NEXT STEP IS! I've always been interested in the elusive ways that music works in society, in the minds of individuals, in the performance of our identities. Those elements of music's cultural work spurred my first subscription of Rolling Stone. Which ...

Friday, August 21, 2009. Syllabus - Music and the Global Metropolis. This fall semester, I will be teaching a course at Colby College entitled "Music and the Global Metropolis." I thought it might be fun and productive to post the syllabus minus audio examples here on Musicology / Matters and on my other blog, Rebellion on Two-Wheels. For commentary and public use. So please, do with it as you like within the limits of reason! Music 197 A: Music and the Global Metropolis. Kariann E. Goldschmitt. 183; app...

Musicology / Matters: October 2009
http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 27, 2009. So far from being wrong in that presumption was I that I quickly found myself actually delighted by the book! It is an absolute treasure. For starters, there is the most charming preface I have ever read. Some excerpts:. Then he talks about how it's easy to say what was sung in Vienna at Schubert's church, or at Notre Dame and Westminster Abbey; but what was sung forty miles away at Kuckucksdorf am Donau or Little Cucking? He holds no grudges, even against the atheists. He ...

Thursday, November 5, 2009. Lectures on your own stuff. Rather than embarrass myself by listing the many examples of interesting assumptions I made during my São Paulo unit, I thought I would add my own take on lecturing best practices. 1) Even if you disagree with a canonic point, lecture is not the time to complicate it. Save those problematizing discussions for individual meetings and small seminar situations. And finally, when in doubt, refer to other sage guides on lecturing. It can be quite fun.

Musicology / Matters: Sounds of Things To Come
http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2010/08/sounds-of-things-to-come.html
Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Sounds of Things To Come. In an upcoming issue of The Annual Review of Anthropology. There is an article co-authored by some well-known music scholars arguing for sound in anthropology. Just last month, a deadline arrived for a special issue of The American Quarterly. Academic presses are clearly on-board: there are now readers and handbooks in production or in press. Some institutions are even lending the interdisciplinary field some credence by explicitly recruiting sound ...

http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Syllabus: Music, Media, and the Representation of Difference. It's that time of year again. Here is the syllabus for "Music, Media and the Representation of Difference," a seminar I am leading this semester. We had our first meeting today, and it looks like I have a very bright group of students. I'm quite pleased. (I should have posted this earlier, but my schedule really ran away with me. Normally I post syllabi before. They are finalized.). 102 Bixler Art and Music Center.

Musicology / Matters: December 2009

Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Escaping Disaster in Higher Ed. As news of fee hikes, ballooning class sizes, faculty furloughs and pay cuts, protests, and arrests (numbering over 220 as of this writing) reached me in my small town in Maine, I breathed a massive sigh of relief. I escaped institutional disaster. I attended UCLA as an undergrad when resident fees ranged between $1200 and $1700 per academic quarter and when (shocker! And flat out dishonesty. And staff researchers demonstrated over stalled con...

http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 2, 2008. It is conference season, and with it comes understandable professional pressures. As you may or may not know, I presented a part of my second chapter from my dissertation at SEM. Last weekend. In just a few days, I will be getting on a plane for Nashville to attend AMS. The good news is that I know what this is. And hopefully I will have this monster known as my chapter 4 relatively under control by a self-imposed due date hanging in the future. One can only hope. Life Away from Judy Branch
Monday, March 16, 2009. One of the most obvious issues we all knew this little bird would face in leaving Judy Branch for the wilds of the Pacific Northwest is homesickness. Perhaps even more obvious, but preferably left unspoken, is that I'd be leaving my nest - the intricately woven network of family and friends that, for more than thirty years has encompassed me in an approximately 300 mile radius. Friday, February 27, 2009. How is this connected to love? Well, as intensely as I feel all the horrible ...
