In 1947, Mark Wakefield and Mark Scearce leased the extreme eastern portion of Science Hill known as The Chapel or Lecture Hall from Misses Juliet and Harriet Poynter. Together they founded Wakefield-Scearce Galleries with the intent of selling British antiques. After four years, Mr. Wakefield retired from the business he helped found, but his name and his inspiration remained with the store. And antique home decor.

Specializing In Fine English Antiques. History of Science Hill. Shops of Science Hill. A yellowish-brown burred surface somewhat between ‘bird’s-eye’ ‘ maple and burr walnut. Used in the eighteenth century and on into the nineteenth, both for crossbanding and for whole surfaces. Origin: East Indies. A whitish-grey fairly hard wood used in country furniture in the eighteenth century and for drawer linings. 8211; A whitish-yellow color, without any figure. Used mainly as an inlay or for stringing lines.
