The closest Mars is to Earth is about 55 million miles; it takes about 3 minutes for radiosignal to get through. And the same 3 minutes for response to get back. So, your online chat will be too slow; almost like an e-mail excthange. And if the buddy is on Pluto instead of Mars, the roundtrip is about 1 hour. We consider it veeery slow. And yes, some modern forms of communication already existed then. Fidonet.
