Writing in the Margins: April 2014
http://julialawrinson.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Writing in the Margins. A blog about writing young adult and children's fiction, and other random observations. Thursday, April 3, 2014. A is for April. 1 It occurred to me that so much of writing is waiting: waiting for ideas to come, or the next scene; waiting to see whether publishers like your latest offering; whether readers like it. Writing is, in this sense, the antithesis of modern life, modern communication, which is all instant, and rarely cause for pondering or reflection. Anybody else read it?
Writing in the Margins: The Flyaway Girls - book and blurb
http://julialawrinson.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-flyaway-girls-book-and-blurb.html
Writing in the Margins. A blog about writing young adult and children's fiction, and other random observations. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. The Flyaway Girls - book and blurb. Nearly five years after its beginning, the idea I wrote about here. Has turned into an actual book. With an actual blurb. And it has a title. The novel started with me musing: what do you do if you're good at what you love, but not the best? Do you give up? Do you keep going with different expectations? How do you measure success?

Writing in the Margins. A blog about writing young adult and children's fiction, and other random observations. Friday, July 19, 2013. When You Remember Me. Though she thought she was Sandy; she was fearless and loyal and always open to new things, new ways of thinking; she lived her life fully and not one person had a bad word to say about her. My cousins and I danced under the stars at her wake: she would have joined us, if she could have. 4 My/our new work-in-progress, Lark (sings) Jaz. Prompted by a ...
Writing in the Margins: December 2014

Writing in the Margins. A blog about writing young adult and children's fiction, and other random observations. Saturday, December 20, 2014. 1 It's hard to think of a word to adequately describe this year: let's settle for hectic. But I have managed, in spite of everything, to write in the margins (ha! See what I did there? First, the indomitable Patricia McMahon and I have finished a draft and (almost) a redraft of. Lark (can't sing) Jaz. This one is going to matter. 2 This is my summer reading list:.
Writing in the Margins: The Flyaway Girls: what Kate thinks
http://julialawrinson.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-flyaway-girls-what-kate-thinks.html
Writing in the Margins. A blog about writing young adult and children's fiction, and other random observations. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. The Flyaway Girls: what Kate thinks. I got my first two advance copies of The Flyaway Girls. In the post the other day. This is my twelfth book, and the sight of the final product after years of writing, researching, editing, more editing, and even more editing never fails to delight me. This novel almost never got written, and, after that, it almost never got finished.

Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. In September, I spoke at the Ballarat. Writers' and Illustrators' Festival. My panel was called: Imagery in Fiction: Visualising, Imagining, Creating. While I spoke about landscape, Simon Swingler. Drew this illustration of me, which I love because it captures exactly what it feels like to have a place enter your consciousness and take over your thoughts. Recently, I've been dipping into Walden. Reading My Side of the Mountain. I read...

Magic Casements: March 2012

Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Tomorrow I'm heading off to Singapore for the Words Go Round Festival. I'm excited at the prospect of meeting hundreds of Singaporean students during the week but I'm also a little sad to be leaving home. We've been back Melbourne for a month, most of which has been taken up with unpacking and getting the hang of living in a house once more. After a year on the road it's been a big adjustment. Saturday, March 03, 2012. Three week resi...

Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. First and Last of 2013. The Clever Cats Book Club. Is my first release for 2013. I've always loved the Aussie Bites series of books for younger readers. It's taken me way too long to write one. Sometimes small books can present interesting challenges. The Clever Cats Book Club is illustrated by a wonderful young artist who just happens to be my second cousin, Florence Boyd. Thursday, May 23, 2013. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Old Self, New Self, Other Self. Warning. This blog post contains nepotism and a dose of nostalgia. Every time I looked at the invitation I felt nostalgic for all my kid's childhoods. Monday, February 04, 2013. I love the cover of this summer's Voiceworks magazine. Possibly, I'm biased because my son, Elwyn Murray, is the designer. But there are layers of ideas in his cover design that intrigue me. Books that Elwyn had loved when he wa...

Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Barney, Carrie and Sam in Black. One of the most startling aspects of creating a character is the prospect that maybe, if you've done your work properly, that character will outlive you. Which makes you wonder, do characters mourn their creators? The American author Jean Craighead George. Died last year at the age of 92. During her lifetime she wrote many award-winning children's books but one of her characters was a particularly ...

julia lawrence | An average Jane on health and nutrition
An average Jane on health and nutrition. SUPERWEEDS (beating the GMO crops at their own game). October 31, 2013. Advocates and opponents of GMOs seem to be in agreement (at least for the moment) that genetically modified crops [probably] aren’t harmful to our health. Why, then, the opposition? Many argue it’s simply a case of transparency: that people deserve to know where their food comes from/how it has been grown. Okay, maybe not stronger, but certainly immune-r. So, what to do? So, there’s the ...
