Blues with Sour Notes. Blues with Sour Notes. 25″ x 19″ Pastel. Both the teapot and the vase in the painting were virtually identical in color. The challenge was to capture the play of light on objects whose color is the same but who contrast with nearly opposite reflective quality. 15″ x 13″ Pastel. Viewers of my work quickly recognize that I refuse to paint one subject or mode. As a result, I am often asked what I most enjoy painting. The simple answer is “portraiture” not just a “pretty” face, but rather ones that are expressive and unique. I was exiting my car in a parking lot some years ago when I glanced up to see this man whose face was absolutely captivating. I quickly got out, introduced myself and asked if he was willing to pose. Gratefully, the answer was yes.
