Chai's Marine Life Blog: April 2012

Saturday, April 28, 2012. Diving in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (3). Day 1 at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (12 May 2010). Or the third dive of the day, we were taken to a dive spot called the "Coral Garden". It was the shallowest dive site (15 m) for the day and visibility was only fair (about 5 m). We didn't find the barracudas nor the turtles that the dive guides "promised". Even so, it has been an enjoyable dive. A pair of mating nudibranchs on algae-covered reef. Found on an old tyre. But the re...

Sunday, May 17, 2009. Looks like it's time I take a blog hiatus. Thanks to all of you who have followed this blog. With winter coming and a PhD thesis to be written, it would be really impossible to keep snorkeling and blogging. I should be back in a few months or probably by end of the year (? Anyway, do check out my earlier posts and tell me what you think! And I will just share with you these photos I took last Saturday at South Cottesloe. These guys looked like some spacecrafts drifting through space.

Friday, February 27, 2009. Rottnest Island - Little Salmon Bay (4). Last of my Little Salmon Bay "series". Two more photos of what I found in the shallow reef. Links to this post. Thursday, February 26, 2009. Rottnest Island - Little Salmon Bay (3). And couldn't) photograph all those fishes that swam past me at the Little Salmon Bay. But I did get some close-up shots of two fishes that I wanted a lot - the crested morwong and the blue-spotted goatfish. Such a beautiful fish! Links to this post. Look at t...

Monday, April 27, 2009. South Cottesloe - Jellyfish (Pseudorhiza haeckeli). The advantage of not having lots of swells, visibility still wasn't very impressive today. The water was reasonably calm. So I was thankful I don't have to spend too much energy fighting the current. But the highlight of today's snorkel had to be this pretty jellyfish which I don't always see! And I have never seen more than one each time. My earlier encounters with this jellyfish - here. Links to this post. Sunday, April 19, 2009.
Chai's Marine Life Blog: March 2009

Monday, March 30, 2009. Cape Peron - John Point. That's how I would describe yesterday's snorkel at John Point, Cape Peron, where I went with Truc, Dhruv and Phil. There's quite a lot of marine life to check out around John Point. I didn't go very far from shore. Still, even in shallow water of 1 meter of so, I had some interesting encounters. The highlight of the day, for me, had to be this beautiful dragonet! I suspect it's an orange and black dragonet. I saw a few sea hares. And I saw many sea urchins.

Saturday, June 2, 2012. Last day in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (14 May 2011). On the last day of my visit to the marine park, I did some snorkeling around the jetty in the morning. It was pretty interesting overall. There were corals and anemones all over the reef. And there were some clownfish around the anemones too. I also found the lionfish which I was told lives under the jetty. Anyway, my most interesting find was this school of razorfish ( Aeoliscus strigatus. June 13, 2012 at 2:37 PM. Index o...
Chai's Marine Life Blog: Comb jellies on the Cottesloe Reef
http://chaitt.blogspot.com/2008/04/comb-jellies-on-cottesloe-reef.html
Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Comb jellies on the Cottesloe Reef. There's enough sunlight, you will see some free-swimming comb jellies in the Cottesloe waters. Despite their name and jellyfish-like appearance, they are not really jellyfish - and they don't sting. So I felt safe swimming around them and taking their photos. The photo of the same comb jelly from a different angle. Its flattened body is more obvious in this photo. The white dots above the critter are suspended particles that reflect light. Be co...
