Learning (by) Teaching: Intro to calculus the graphing stories way
http://juliatsygan.blogspot.com/2012/03/intro-to-calculus-graphing-stories-way.html
Sunday, March 25, 2012. Intro to calculus the graphing stories way. I think every IB teacher approaches calculus the same way: look, average rate of change. Look, instantaneous rate of change. Secant, tangent, gradient of tangent. Previous years I've tried to make this introduction come alive by giving students a function describing the distance fallen by a parachute-jumper, and having students discover themselves what the average speed would be, and the instantaneous speed at certain moments. Some stude...
Learning (by) Teaching: What I teach
http://juliatsygan.blogspot.com/p/my-courses.html
For better or for worse, I am an IB-teacher. I am bound by very specific syllabuses, designed in the halls of educational power far away in foreign lands. I must prepare my students for a final examination which I am not allowed to see and which is graded by complete strangers. I know that I am priviledged to be where I am. Mathematical Studies - lower difficulty, aimed at students interested in the humanities and social sciences. Each course (except the EE) spans the two final years of high school.
Learning (by) Teaching: Scaffolding questions
http://juliatsygan.blogspot.com/2012/05/scaffolding-questions.html
Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Show that if f(x) = sin(x 2) e (sin(x) then f'(x) = 2xcos(x 2) cos(x)*e (sin(x) . This is an example of the "Show that A can be transformed by some relevant mathematical process into B" type of question. I claim that if f(x) = ln(x 3) e (x 2)*cos(x) then f'(x) = 3/x - 4*e (4x)*sin(x). What is my mistake? Is it true that if f(x) = ln(sin(x 3) then f'(x)=1/tan(x 3)? Some questions that need to be answered:. How can scaffolding activities be combined/coexist with explorative investiga...
Learning (by) Teaching: Review of optimization
http://juliatsygan.blogspot.com/2014/12/review-of-optimization.html
Saturday, December 20, 2014. I'm planning to use the following sort-in-order activity with a group that will review calculus and especially struggled with optimization. I wonder if this task would also work as an introductory activity to optimization, as in: make sense of this, given whatever conceptual understanding you have of derivatives. Any feedback on this? Learning (by) Teaching: Simple and Compound interest: a sorting activity
http://juliatsygan.blogspot.com/2012/09/simple-and-compound-interest-sorting.html
Sunday, September 16, 2012. Simple and Compound interest: a sorting activity. This is very basic, and does several good things:. Connect to student understanding of sequences and series (which we had studied the previous weeks), percent, and functions (mine haven't studied exponential growth yet). Get students discussing concepts such as interest rates, loans and repayments. All my students were very actively engaged with thinking and arguing about this activity. I ended the lesson by asking how much Jes...

What is Rigor? | Confidently Limited

Tacking through math education. Dreams of an Integrated Curriculum. Can These Kids Be “Saved” by Common Core? November 10, 2013. But other definitions of rigor have synonyms such as hardness , difficulty and stringency . In our context we can perhaps call this depth and add this dimension to those of exactness and logic with which we present the material. As an example, consider radical expressions as introduced by Pearson’s Integrated Mathematics. And an European collection of problems. The SIMMS text i...

Tacking through math education. The Smartest Kids in the World. Nicholson Baker, Algebra II, Lurking Variables and Making Shakespeare Elective →. Common Core (Geometry) – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. October 20, 2013. So how is Geometry faring in Common Core? There is no doubt that Common Core envisions a superior Geometry course compared to what we teach now. The projects, the modeling and the writing components will require more critical thinking from the students. Common Core Geometry also wants to...

Tacking through math education. Monthly Archives: October 2013. Nicholson Baker, Algebra II, Lurking Variables and Making Shakespeare Elective. October 23, 2013. In a recent article in Harper’s magazine, Wrong Answer The case against Algebra II. Let’s say the general well-being of the population. I would argue that Baker’s statement is an example of a lurking variable. Russia’s math prowess was originated from above, when Peter the Great modernized Russia by force. Since modernization implied a stron...

Tacking through math education. Can These Kids Be “Saved” by Common Core? Diane Ravitch and Market Forces →. Justin, Tom and c2396. December 10, 2013. I am a science and engineering professional who seriously considered teaching as a career change. I am the son of a teacher. I understand and value the profession, and have a passion for imparting knowledge to others. I have taught as a graduate assistant in a university setting, and enjoyed it. Less than half of what I am currently making as an engineer.

Tacking through math education. Monthly Archives: December 2013. Diane Ravitch and Market Forces. December 12, 2013. One of the more discussed recent books on education is Diane Ravitch’s “Reign of Error”. Ravitch argues that poverty and socioeconomic inequality produces kids who enter our educational system handicapped in their ability to learn. This poor start translates in poor performance as the individual moves through primary and secondary education. In other countries, there may be many barriers to...

One child at a time…. They’re more like guidelines This insight has helped me to better understand what to look for in lessons, to think deeply about how to teach my students what they need to know to be successful. These guidelines help point me in the right direction, but they are not the end all be all. February 16, 2013. 4 responses to “Curriculum pacing”. February 16th, 2013 at 18:52. It is really exciting to hear stories about this level of differentiation happening in math, a discipline that seems so far behind in regards to individualizing instruction. As your example shows us, it can be done! March 16th, 2013 at 11:31. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Tag, your it.

Teaching is… | respondingtothecall
https://respondingtothecall.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/teaching-is
One child at a time…. When I started this program I was asked to think of a metaphor for teaching. I chose the image of a bridge. After this week, I would like to suggest another metaphor, and that would be…. Yep, a roller coaster. There are many aspects to a roller coaster – steep ups, steep downs, corkscrews, tunnels, tight turns, slow starts, rapid middles and ends. Then you get off, catch your breath…and get in line again! One child at a time…. Another quarter here and gone. The saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun! In just a few short months, I will have a piece of paper that says I can teach, and some knowledge too! This quarter I made it my goal to comment at least once on every member in my cohorts blogs. It has been challenging, and I still have a few to comment to, but I have also been privileged to hear many different experiences and ideas about teaching. I have also continued to respond to people. People ...
