Urmi of One: Leaving on a jet plane
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2009/08/leaving-on-jet-plane_24.html
Flying solo in Germany. Monday, August 24, 2009. Leaving on a jet plane. In under four hours, I’ll be flying to Munich to spend six months living, working and travelling in Europe! Channelling my inner high schooler, ZOMG. So I’m really excited about moving to Germany, albeit for a much shorter period of time. I also plan to go further afield on weekends and soak up the history, culture and food that Europe has in so much abundance. And you’ll hear it all here first! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Urmi of One: Ein wenig zum Essen: Part 1
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/10/ein-wenig-zum-essen-part-1.html
Flying solo in Germany. Sunday, October 17, 2010. Ein wenig zum Essen: Part 1. This post is proudly brought to you by:. A) My two weeks of intractable writer’s block,. 8217;s suggestion that trying to write about something other than Ireland might prise open the floodgates, and. C) My curious talent for meditating on the topic of food for inordinate amounts of time. Let’s start in the bakery, shall we? I would come home, load up the bread with some delicious Bergkäse (hard mountain cheese), Schwarzwälder...

Urmi of One: Adventures in the North
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/11/adventures-in-north.html
Flying solo in Germany. Sunday, November 7, 2010. Adventures in the North. But the same could be said for all the topics I’ve prattled on about on this blog, and the convoluted ins and outs of the Irish situation are likely to fade further and further into the backwoods of my brain over time, so I need to give it my best shot for my own benefit. So here goes. As I’ve already intimated in earlier posts. The second major control mechanism the British used in Ireland were the Penal Laws. This was a seri...

Urmi of One: August 2010
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Flying solo in Germany. Tuesday, August 31, 2010. I’ve been afflicted with writer’s block recently. I’ve started at least half a dozen posts, only to abandon them as a muddle of incongruous paragraphs that just won’t come together. Ugh! I can’t believe I’ve only posted twice since summer started. Alida, coolest American in the world and bloggeress extraordinaire. After a crazily rainy night drive through the foothills of the Austrian Alps, we woke up to the cool, quiet peace of a foggy Zillertal morning.

Urmi of One: May 2010
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Flying solo in Germany. Monday, May 31, 2010. The GPST strikes back. In an earlier post, I introduced y’all to my flatmate, the German Poo Shelf Toilet. Like all roomie relationships, it took us a little while to learn each other’s quirks. But over time, we grew used to each other, and settled into a harmonious living arrangement. Or so I thought. I agreed, and hung up. Hi, I live in my address , are you the hausmeister? No Not at the moment. No, you called the right person. But I’m not working...I might...

Urmi of One: A clifftop ramble
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/10/clifftop-ramble.html
Flying solo in Germany. Sunday, October 31, 2010. Wasn’t the only reason we visited the little seaside village of Doolin in County Clare. This windswept stretch of Ireland’s west coast is famous around the world for the starkly beautiful Cliffs of Moher. In a country that’s known for its gorgeous coastline, surely this string of brooding black crags could lay claim to being the most stunning stretch of all. We skirted the cliff edge for a good couple of hours, occasionally jumping the fence to avoid the ...

Urmi of One: September 2010
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Flying solo in Germany. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. I sincerely believe that there are very few things in life more amusing than listening to the route announcements at an English train station. I could just sit for hours listening to a recital of all those whimsical place names that sound like they’ve come straight out of an Enid Blyton novel. So by the time I got to the Narrow Boat and Niall asked “warm beer or normal? 8221;, I knew what he was talking about. The Lamb and Flag is over 300 years old,...

Urmi of One: Tunes and pints
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/10/tunes-and-pints.html
Flying solo in Germany. Wednesday, October 27, 2010. The tiny, isolated village of Doolin, population 250, is about as unlikely a tourist hotspot as one could imagine. You could easily be forgiven for driving past on your way through the silent green expanse of coastal County Clare, without suspecting it to be anything more than an unremarkable smattering of farmhouses interspersed with the odd tumbledown church and the occasional horse. Forgiven, Not Forgotten. October 31, 2010 at 12:17 AM. We did not w...

Urmi of One: Living in Munich – what I’ll miss
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/11/living-in-munich-what-ill-miss.html
Flying solo in Germany. Sunday, November 21, 2010. Living in Munich – what I’ll miss. It only really hit me today, when I was packing up things in boxes, ready to send back home. I’m leaving Munich in only ten days. And all the while, I’ve been waxing nostalgic about this city I’ve been lucky enough to call home for a year. Little things I’ll miss:. Padded butt rests on the train. So unnecessary, yet such a great touch. I haven’t seen them in any other city. Seitenbacher Müsli. Not really sure how I&...

Urmi of One: Taking care of business
http://urmiofone.blogspot.com/2010/04/taking-care-of-business.html
Flying solo in Germany. Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Taking care of business. But nothing in Heim Der Urmi compares, in terms of sheer weirdness, to the toilet. Here is a cross-section of a normal toilet (you’ll have to excuse my crappy MS-Paint skills). You do your thing, it falls into a deep pool of bog water, you flush, you’re done. And here is what my apartment toilet in Munich looks like. The negative consequences of this design are manifold. Firstly,. When I first moved in, I thought there was maybe ...
