As a classroom teacher, I feel I can now better explain the rules of phonics and the appropriate sounds for letters in a word. In grade school and all through high school, I knew I was a poor reader and speller, and I didn’t know phonics. It was difficult for me to pronounce some words correctly. I had to read and re-read to understand. I never heard the word ‘dyslexia’ until I was 69. It was only two years ago that I poured my heart out to my family and said we have to do something for the children who are having the same problems that I had.
