The voice of Monk: October 2013
http://voiceofmonk.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 18, 2013. I broke tradition and decided to talk about how I develop characters. I've been a character actor for several years on stage and in the vocal booth. Covering everything from Santa to soldiers, cowboys to reindeer! And I want to give a huge thanks again to the amazing Peter O'Connell. Who helped out with the session. The man knows how to run. Who is this Character? First off, I don't do impersonations. However the voices I hear do INFLUENCE the voices I use. There's more to him a...

The voice of Monk: June 2014
http://voiceofmonk.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 16, 2014. This is a post I've been meaning to write for a while. It SORT OF has to do with V.O. work as I'm in the middle of a 30 pound challenge for FaffCon 7. I can't make FaffCon 7 due to a scheduling conflict, however I have been carrying around an extra 30 to 40 pounds of weight that I can certainly afford to lose. Wait, Monk, you're giving weight loss tips? Those calories are sneaky, THEY'RE IN EVERYTHING! What does that mean? A sausage egg McMuffin with a hash brown is 570 calories ac...

The voice of Monk: A New Pre-Amp
http://voiceofmonk.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-new-pre-amp.html
Friday, December 19, 2014. Ok, ok, ok. There is a known thing out there called G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and it is a serious affliction that affects techie types. First of all, to be successful in VO, you need talent and a way to capture that talent. You don't need ProTools and a $3000 microphone. You do need a quiet space and a quality microphone that fits that space that captures your dulcet tones and you'll need some sort of software to edit and get that audio out the door. I've been wanting ...

That's NOT Voiceover! - Joe's DumpJoe's Dump

Fallout From My Nuclear Brain. Skip to primary content. That’s NOT Voiceover! July 27, 2015. That’s NOT Voiceover. Last week, Backstage posted an article entitled “Do You Have the Right Stuff for Voice Acting? At the end, I was directed to a rather disappointing Quiz on the “That’s Voceover” site. Just for fun, I took the quiz twice. The first time, I answered as honestly as I could given the questions… and got this result:. So, I guess that means I shouldn’t be in voice acting, right? Since the quiz res...

The voice of Monk: 2015 Marketing
http://voiceofmonk.blogspot.com/2015/03/2015-marketing.html
Friday, March 13, 2015. Ok, it's March, the temps are warming and we're shaking off the cabin fever. Time to get motivated! Right now, I have to admit, I'm busy. The eLearning is cooking along, the commercial work comes in and out, (regular, but often enough) and the studio is sounding nice. But there's a plan to do more. Several months ago there was a great meeting in NYC with a fellow "Voiceoverist" Philip Banks. And he said something profound. A couple things actually. Start at the Top! I have used a ...

Tuesday, March 19, 2013. The Magic of Marketing. Ok I have an agent. James Pentaudi of Albany talent. Is one of the people that represents me and gets me work. Great guy, been with him for years and love working with him. Here's the fun part, the actors roster of who is going to be in for these several days of shooting is a long list of names. First and last. Except me. That's all it said. 2:30PM, playing the part of Frank Heller, Monk. When I walked onto the set, the director yells "MONK! Introducing th...

The voice of Monk: May 2013
http://voiceofmonk.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 2, 2013. So the room sounds great. It really does. People walk in, we shut the door and there's a "Wow" factor. It's that cool. You knew there was going to be a but, right? The audio I was capturing, didn't sound 100%. It was time to fine tune, get into the details of it. The More You Listen. We could insert the usual "Brother-in-Law" jokes here, but I trust Fred and I trust his ears. He's the Front Of House engineer (FOH) for Infinity Hall. Onto the preamp. My suspicion was that the vi...
