Raffles hotel – all out of free Singapore Slings. From my hotel in Johor Bharu, Malaysia, i crossed into Singapore for a day of sightseeing and to complete this part of my plan. Riding across the border and over the bridge was quick and easy and apart from the arrival card for Singapore immigration there is no other paperwork needed. As i passed customs, i wondered what Singapore’s legal view on pepper spay was. I remembered my passport at least. Out of my budget. Apprehensively back to Malaysia.

Take your time – one of the few (average) restaurants on Salang Beach. Monsoon season should have been clearing up by mid Feb, but a late start has meant a late finish and it was pretty wet when i was there. The water was still pretty clear and when the sun did come out it’s easy to see how this place can be a tropical paradise. Salang beach, Tioman. Huge monitor lizards everywhere. Wake up…walk out…swim – Tekek beach. Cats everywhere too – Tekek Beach, Tioman. Crystal clear water at Salang beach.

This one won’t kill you. I had already been to Penang. At the start of my trip into Malaysia, so decided to blast on past from Pangkor Island. Straight to Alor Setar. I had heard of the Chinese snake temple last time i was here so decided to ride down and take a look. The actual temple is run of the mill, and much like any other Chinese temple, with the exception of there being a few lethargic snakes wrapped around bamboo. Cameron Highlands, riding from Ipoh = 120kms. After so long in the heat, the cool fresh air in the Cameron Highlands came as a welcome change and with some great views it’s a place well worth visiting. If you can’t be arsed with the 3 hr trek up through the jungle, there is a road that winds through the tea plantations right to the top of Gunung Brinchang, which at 6666ft has views as far as the eye can see. Why do people pick their own? Cold and wet…nice. 20 seconds of view before the cloud rolls in.

Just Riding My Bike. Sunday, May 24, 2009. Isa and I found our way to the unspoiled island of Ikaria. After a few days of camping on a beach in the south, we drove to the other side of the island and found paradise. At the beach we met Daniel, a German artist, who has been living in a cave along the Chalares River for the past month. He gave us the tour of the area, including this beautiful waterfall. We also briefly met this friendly old man who was one of the many communists exiled to this island.
