https://sauerwine.blogspot.com/2015/01/nash-equilibrium-in-sealed-bid-senior.html
Formerly the blog of Ben Sauerwine. Saturday, January 10, 2015. Nash Equilibrium in the Sealed-Bid Senior Auction. At work we've been thinking a lot about auction theory, and I was challenged to solve for the Nash equilibrium. In the sealed-bid senior auction. I found the solution and I think the result is pretty interesting, but before I get to that point I want to give some background about what an auction is and this scenario in particular. Of the item at auction. In the case where you lose the au...

Ben Li-Sauerwine's Notebook: November 2013

Formerly the blog of Ben Sauerwine. Sunday, November 17, 2013. Pinhole Picture from Arizona. Last January, I hid 5 pinhole cameras in the desert near Phoenix, AZ with the goal of taking some stunning pinhole photographs, taking advantage of the bright desert sun and the reflective desert sand. In order to ensure that they wouldn't be found, we pulled over at a random place along N. Bush Highway, walked about 50 feet in the desert, and plastic tied the cameras to stumps or desert flora. Knowing this will ...

Formerly the blog of Ben Sauerwine. Sunday, February 15, 2015. A 3D Printable Model of Cloud Gate aka "The Bean". There are few works of modern art as beloved as Chicago's Cloud Gate. Aka "The Bean". It is interactive without having any moving parts, and indeed without being mobile at all. Nobody at any age can resist engaging with their reflection in its curiously curved surface. I started playing with TinkerCad. Because I wanted to use the 3D printer at work, a Makerbot Replicator. The evolution of the...

Ben Li-Sauerwine's Notebook: Bayesian Network Reconstruction Using Systems Genetics Data: Comparison of MCMC Methods

Formerly the blog of Ben Sauerwine. Thursday, January 29, 2015. Bayesian Network Reconstruction Using Systems Genetics Data: Comparison of MCMC Methods. Several former colleagues and I collaborated on a paper that was finally published in Genetics on January 28. You can read it for free online here. I won't regurgitate the entire work here, but I did want to take a moment to say why this research is important for many fields, not just genetics. In fact, the Bayesian network. Ben Li-Sauerwine's Notebook: October 2013
https://sauerwine.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Formerly the blog of Ben Sauerwine. Tuesday, October 29, 2013. The recent US Government Shutdown came at great expense to the American people. One of the side effects was that our national parks were shut down for two and a half weeks. Ordinarily this is merely an inconvenience, but in my case it was a serious problem: the Sunrise area closes on October 15, and the shutdown meant that my pinhole cameras would be irretrievable until next Summer. Or would they be? Here are the successful photos:. Taken fro...
