È separata dall'isola Kunashir della Russia da parte della Stretto di Nemuro. Shiretoko il nome deriva dalla parola Ainu etok lingua signore, che significa "la fine della terra" o "il luogo dove la terra si protende". Le città di Rausu e Shari coprono la penisola.
