Sunday, March 16, 2008. The Statement of the Century:. The Cartoon Body of the New Yorker. On a daily basis, graduate students in anthropology departments across the nation slave away writing complicated thesis papers and monographs in an attempt to theorize about our cultural leaps and bounds, the ever-changing technological and behavioral puzzle that is the human species. Even art critics ‘review’ our habits and tendencies in wordy, multiple page studies. Alex Gregory’s cartoon in a 1999 issue of...

Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Monday, January 28, 2008. Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy. Wah, wah, wah, are typical lyrics for an emo-screamo boy band struggling with a complicated life. This is the opening impression from the film Once, a dark horse candidate in movie ratings. Once unfolds pinching the mind with its non-fairytale romantically dramatic story line, genuine onscreen chemistry, and incredible soundtrack capturing art with an average family camcorder. Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Was a...

Monday, March 17, 2008. Horton Hears a Who. What does it take to win the no. 1 rated box office smash? The Disney G-rated movie Horton hears a Who won this weekends opening title. Jim Carey playing the voice of Horton made for a comical relief message that turned a new tune towards the end. In a crazy turn of events it appears as if the new box office hits appear to be the less gory less sexualized G-rated Disney animated movies. Les arts de journalisme. Monday, February 25, 2008. At 80, Oscar is conservative? A Review of the 80th Annual Academy Awards, aired on February 24th, 2008 on ABC. Sure the standard phrase “and the award goes to…” was used numerous times throughout the night but something was missing from this year’s 80. There was haute couture, diamonds and schmoozing; tears were shed, speeches delivered, and awards accepted but it was a different awards ceremony. Differing from previous years, the film nominations this ...

Les arts de journalisme. Wednesday, January 30, 2008. The Language of Movies. A response to Francis Davis's Afterglow: A Last Conversation with Pauline Kael. Now here is a woman that gets it and is not afraid of telling the public how she gets it. Known for her witty, opinionated, and poignant reviews, Pauline Kael has made a mark on the art of being a critic. Her writing evokes the enthusiasm that she has for the movies that she reviews, whether she likes them or not. She defines herself, as well as her...
