Mixed Media: Movie Reviews: State of Play, Star Trek, New in Town

http://kaciesmixedmedia.blogspot.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-state-of-play-star-trek.html

Thursday, September 10, 2009. Movie Reviews: State of Play, Star Trek, New in Town. Star Trek was probably the best movie I've seen this year. I'm not a Trekkie, in fact I knew nothing about it other than that it was the future and it was in space. For me, it was awesome, a total crowd pleaser. Great plot, great acting, funny and dramatic at once. I thoroughly enjoyed it and totally want to own it! 35/5 stars (ALMOST four stars). Tudors (the TV Series). September 11, 2009 at 12:53 AM. Yeah, you know what...

Mixed Media: Book Review: The Moon in the Mango Tree

http://kaciesmixedmedia.blogspot.com/2009/09/book-review-moon-in-mango-tree.html

Saturday, September 19, 2009. Book Review: The Moon in the Mango Tree. The Moon in the Mango Tree. By Pamela Binnings Ewen. 25 out of 5 stars. So - it was an interesting story but ultimately I rather disliked the main character and the writing wasn't fantastic. The final philosophy is only portrayed in the last few pages and actually seemed ridiculous to me after reading an entire book of her wrestling with faith and doubt and various religions. Mixed Media: Book Review: Still Alice by Lisa Genova

http://kaciesmixedmedia.blogspot.com/2009/09/book-review-still-alice-by-lisa-genova.html

Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Book Review: Still Alice by Lisa Genova. 45 out of 5 stars. It was very emotional to read, and you grasp the deep feelings of helplessness as an intelligent and independent woman loses her grasp on reality and memory. It made me ache for my aging grandparents, knowing that dementia works in similar ways. I totally recommend this book. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. BoMuMo: A Good Look at Death: Comments on A Prairie Home Companion

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-good-look-at-death-comments-on.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Friday, February 28, 2014. A Good Look at Death: Comments on A Prairie Home Companion. A Prairie Home Companion with a few friends this week. Hoping to warm them to the subject and approach of the film, I prepared the following introductory comments:. When A Prairie Home Companion. First came out, I had never read or listened carefully to Garrison Keillor. I knew about his radio show, but just that it existed and was generally well-liked across generations.

BoMuMo: Classism vs. The Caste System: A Review of Fatalism and Development by Dor Bahadur Bista

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2011/05/while-i-was-in-kathmandu-on-vacation-i.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Thursday, May 5, 2011. Classism vs. The Caste System: A Review of Fatalism and Development by Dor Bahadur Bista. You know that a book has something to say when the author disappears under mysterious circumstances soon after its publication. So it is with Dor Bahadar Bista's little critique of his homeland. In. Fatalism and Development: Nepal's Struggle for Modernization. A lesson learned on this very blog in my review of Overnight. I can't confirm or deny much ...

BoMuMo: Highbrow Historical Pulp Fiction: A review of Them by Joyce Carol Oates

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2011/05/highbrow-historical-pulp-fiction-review.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Sunday, May 22, 2011. Highbrow Historical Pulp Fiction: A review of Them by Joyce Carol Oates. Joyce Carol Oates is the Tom Waits of highbrow pulp fiction. My friend Jonathan Kotulski made the above statement, mostly in jest I think, during a recent phone conversation. My most recent JCO book is actually one of her earlier works. As illustrated boldly in the picture above, it is named. The first trick she plays twice. In her intro, she bills the story "a wo...

BoMuMo: April 2010

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Monday, April 5, 2010. Books took a resounding lead over movies this month, with fifteen books read and only seven movies watched. So after only three months, I have read thirty five books toward my goal of fifty-two this year. I'm reading more than the required pace for a simple reason: I love reading. More specifically, I love reading good books. When I read books that aren't good, my desire to move on to better ones compels me toward that last page. By Joyce...

BoMuMo: In the Air to Germany: A review of Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2011/07/from-here-to-germany-review-of-gravitys.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Saturday, July 9, 2011. In the Air to Germany: A review of Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. If you must read. In this hypercaffeinated, timeless traverse from Atlanta to Germany, you begin reading. Here's the opening paragraph:. A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.". You think, as your plane hums, vibrates, eases its way over the Atlantic. What in Pynchon's world is going on? I will attempt to ...

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Monday, February 22, 2010. A Few Thoughts from Nabokov. Just this morning, I read a 1964 Playboy interview where author Vladimir Nabokov discusses, among other things, his book Lolita. I thought the following quotes were noteworthy:. A work of art has no importance whatever to society. It is only important to the individual, and only the individual reader is important to me.". The interview, which is quite good if you've read Lolita. Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

BoMuMo: December 2013

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Monday, December 30, 2013. On Love and Place: Ian's favorite books in 2013. In my travels and readings this year, I meditated on human communities and their relationships to landscapes. I found tremendous insight in the writings of Wendell Berry, Barry Lopez, and the author who defined this year's themes and most influenced my thinking, Wallace Stegner. Here were some of the books that I found most enriching this year:. What Every Person Should Know About War.

BoMuMo: March 2010

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. In casual discussions about a given film, there is one word which alerts me to the fact that the person with whom I'm speaking did not understand the piece, or does not possess the vocabulary to interact with it. The word is weird. In fact, with the exception of Hunter S. Thompson. No one seems able to artfully use the word. Given the chance, I'd gleefully scratch weird. Along with its companions, beautiful. Aviva's own name is a palind...

BoMuMo: January 2011

http://bomumo.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Books, Music and Movies Beyond Objectivity. Monday, January 31, 2011. Good, Evil, and the Rest of the World Between: A Review of The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. In my living room after church, we discussed good and evil. So we westerners who tend to like the idea that there is a right and that it's pretty much exactly what we think, gravitate toward art which affirms this. I believe it's why. The Lord of the Rings. Was so popular, why we loved. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. The story revo...

Sunday, January 25, 2009. This is my favorite new page. I love these pictures that my sister, Katie, took in Yellowstone. . Posted by Kacie Powell Keele. Posted by Kacie Powell Keele. I can't seem to figure out how to get really good pictures of scrapbook pages. They are all bowed in the middle and not as clear as I would like. Maybe my camera just isn't equipped for this. If anybody has any idea how I can get better pictures, please let me know. Posted by Kacie Powell Keele. Monday, January 19, 2009.
