In the Lord of the Rings trilogy my favourite character was Aragorn, the ranger from the north descended from the kings of former times, a man who is brave, noble, and loyal. In the recent movies, he was wonderfully portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, who brought Aragorn to life in full. Thursday, June 11, 2009. The wonder of the mundane. It was interesting to hear a segment on The Current yesterday. A conversation with Wafa Sa...

Travelling with Gershom: Television's best-kept secret
http://dpbarnes.blogspot.com/2013/06/televisions-best-kept-secret.html
Ruminations from Midian.do you grok it? Friday, June 14, 2013. We watch a lot of TV. Much of what's on these days is pretty bad, but there are some shining moments. We tend to like mysteries, detective shows and classic police procedurals, as well as action/thriller type programs. Our tastes run to modern British mysteries, such as Inspector Lynley and the BBC update of Sherlock. But there are some North American shows that meet the mark as well. Travelling with Gershom: June 2013
http://dpbarnes.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Ruminations from Midian.do you grok it? Sunday, June 30, 2013. This great R&B song, released in 1965 and originally performed by Fontella Bass, is as infectious today as it was when it first hit the charts. I don't think it is simply the beat, or the fabulous vocal, that reaches people (although they certainly do). I think it touches us because it speaks to a fundamental need: "can't you see that I'm lonely? Our loneliness is deeply internal, in that private self who does not want to show a mask to the o...

Ruminations from Midian.do you grok it? Monday, October 6, 2008. I think it's gonna be a long long time. Well, it has been a long long time since I posted anything on my blog.Boo me! Hopefully, this can get me back in the swing of things. A lot has happened since my last entry in April: we vacationed in Germany and Austria, returned to Canada, started to settle back into our house, began to establish new routines, and more. So there is a lot to write about. But let me start with Elton John.

So here is an on-air devotional (slightly modified) that I read some years ago on VOWR in St. John's. Integrity in the Workplace: Lessons from the Life of Joseph. The word “integrity” comes to us from the Latin integritas. 8221; (Genesis 39:8-9). What was Joseph’s response? Integrity in action, both in priva...
