Wednesday, April 1, 2009. This is the Pledge of Allegiance in Inupiaq. I heard the 5th and 6th graders recite it this morning before they recited the English version. I was quite impressed. Afterward, they worked on irregular verbs and then explained the difference between a simile and a metaphor. Wednesday, April 1, 2009. All of the students made Eskimo doughnuts and bread (which they shaped and put raisins on) today. The entire school smelled like a greasy bakery. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. One flew over the basketball net. Here is part of the entrance to Kaktovik's Harold Kaveolook school. I felt completely spoiled today. April 1, 2009 at 9:05 AM. Man-tights, farthingales, ruffs, trussings, oh my! They have to be worn to be believed. Did you pack some up there with you? I am glad you're having a good time. April 1, 2009 at 5:20 PM. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. The Kaktovik School has currently 57 students enrolled, early childhood (3 and 4 year old kids), pre-kindergarten to 12 Grade and employs 8 full time teachers. Teachers teach multiple subjects and grade levels. The school building is extremely well maintained (Thanks Dave Tetreau and team), beautifully decorated, and provides a welcoming atmosphere. Saturday, April 11, 2009. Friday night was a busy one for the Kiana School with the potluck, basketball camp, singing group, AND it was the night of the 3rd and 4th grade sleepover. Students who came to most of the SBA practice sessions were eligible for the sleepover. 15 out of 19 kids got to come, and only two of those 15 were boys. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Today was a great day - I already started feeling sad about leaving. I really like the students here. They are great kids, extremely respectful and more importantly, curious about stuff. All of the signs in the school are written in English, Inupiaq and Braille. Try saying Illitchuqsriniagvik three times fast (or even one time slowly).
