Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Drawing to a close. So my time here is drawing to a close. I haven't written in this blog as often as I should have but pressure of work is my excuse. I have now completed two spoor surveys and two and three quarter camera surveys. I am moving into the social part of my research for my last two months here and will be administering questionnaires and doing interviews with as many farmers as I can. Kalahari Wild: February 2009

http://www.kalahariwild.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 8, 2009. Not so nocturnal after all! My camera trapping survey is now into its fourth week and the variety of species captured so far is quite impressive. Sixteen different species of mammal have been photographed, including nine different carnivore species. This might seem what you would expect in an African bush environment, but this is on a cattle farm and so competition for resources is high. Other interesting captures have been of an African wild cat ( Felis lybica.

Kalahari Wild: Spy in the camp

http://www.kalahariwild.blogspot.com/2009/01/spy-in-camp.html

Monday, January 5, 2009. Spy in the camp. I am now starting, what for me, is potentially the most exciting part of my research - camera trapping. Studying predators can be incredibly frustrating as they tend to occur at low densities, are secretive and generally either nocturnal or crepuscular. All of these things make them very difficult to see! Am looking forward to seeing what turns up! Thanks for the education- I look forward to reading more. January 29, 2009 at 11:58 AM. Spy in the camp.

Kalahari Wild: January 2009

http://www.kalahariwild.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 12, 2009. I have now completed my pilot camera trapping period and have started the survey proper. Here are a couple of nice pictures I got in the first ten days during the pilot. Monday, January 5, 2009. Spy in the camp. For caracal in Botswana this is very exciting as there has been no research done on this species here. However, having the cameras out on the farm means that, although I am primarily interested in caracal, I can gather data on all the other predator species too.

It's a Wild Life: Monarchs rule

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2015/06/monarchs-rule.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Saturday, June 20, 2015. When we acquired our property 10 years ago, we were surprised by the absence of the common milkweed. Has made our home its home. A tall and sturdy plant with thick leaves and pretty pink flowers, the milkweed is the primary food source of the beautiful Monarch butterfly. Monarch caterpillar (larval stage). Monarch chrysalis (pupal stage). As an adult male, Henry identifies as a butterfly. There will be no more...

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Friday, May 23, 2014. Another Wood Duck family is born. It has been a long while since I've updated you on the goings-on here in our little slice of paradise. Rest assured its not. Because there haven't been plenty of fabulous wildlife dramas playing out each and every day. I'm pleased to announce that on May 8, 2014, another Wood Duck family made its way into the world. To see the video from inside the nest box, and here. Watermark templ...

It's a Wild Life: Date night

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2013/05/date-night.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Last night we spent the evening down by the pond, enjoying the campfire, eating chili, and taking in the pre-summer scenery. A chili dinner down at Camp Firefly is our version of going out for an expensive meal and a play. And though you don't know for sure who the characters are going to be or what the story line is about, you know that something interesting and surprising will happen nonetheless. The Wilderness Wor...

It's a Wild Life: April 2015

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Death on the driveway. Our driveway is a narrow, rustic path that leads to some unseen destination deep in the forest. I have driven or walked this half mile stretch of wildlife highway at least once a day, nearly every day, for the past 10 years, and I know every bend, dip, protrusion and rut like the back of my hand. So when something unusual appears on or around it, I take notice. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

It's a Wild Life: Is this where the ducklings go?

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2015/06/is-this-where-ducklings-go.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Monday, June 8, 2015. Is this where the ducklings go? In the last week, we’ve had two wildlife sightings at the pond that remind us of the tough road ahead for our Wood Duck ducklings. First, we came across this old gal below. She's a Common Snapping Turtle. If it’s any consolation, though, it’s tough going for everyone. It’s the circle of life in Appalachia! Is this where the ducklings go? Here's where I've been (virtually) going. Honest...

It's a Wild Life: Predator vs. Predator vs. Predator

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/predator-vs-predator-vs-predator.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Wednesday, November 7, 2012. Predator vs. Predator vs. Predator. Roscoe is definitely an indoor-outdoor cat. Best as I can tell he spent the first year of his life on his own, fending for himself. But I often wonder what trials and tribulations he encountered during that first year. Did he have a mother who taught him how to hunt and dismember his prey, or did that come to him by instinct? And if so, how did he learn to defend himself?

http://kimswildlife.blogspot.com/2013/05/hello-world.html

It's a Wild Life. One human's reflections on the nature of Nature. Monday, May 13, 2013. Our Wood Duck babies began hatching on May 9, 2013 at 8:00 in the morning. By noon, a total of 13 fluffy ducklings had been born. That evening, Lady left the nest box around 5pm for her usual dinner, leaving the clan alone for the first time. She returned about an hour later where she and her baker's dozen spent a safe and cozy night together. Here's where I've been (virtually) going. Here's what I've been reading.

A closer look at our Wood Ducks. Surprise.youre on candid camera! Here's where I've been (virtually) going. Here's what I've been reading. Walden; or, Life in the Woods, by Henry David Thoreau.
