On Epithets: sanegreekrecons
http://sanegreekrecons.livejournal.com/19141.html
Has an interesting post on Epithets. One practice common in modern Hellenic polytheist practice is addressing a God with a long litany of epithets. The practice comes straight from classical sources. You can't read a myth about Aphrodite without hearing Her called Laughter-loving, Golden, and half a dozen others. You can't read a story about Hermes without hearing Him called Wily one, Slayer of Argos, and many more. The vast majority of these lists of epithets provide absolutely no explanation or context...

Greek Ethics Pt.2: Timé, Kléos, Aidos and Xenia: elaion
http://elaion.livejournal.com/3187.html
Greek Ethics Pt.2: Timé, Kléos, Aidos and Xenia. In addition to the Four (or Five) Cardinal Virtues, Greek ethics also held other values. The main ones were Eusebia, Kléos, Timé, and Xenia. One that has already been mentioned is that of Moderation, or keeping to the Mean or the Middle Path. This is, not in itself unique to Hellenismos. One of the Confucian Classics is the Great Mean. Another value of great importance was the related values of Timé, Kléos (Honor and Fame) and Aidos (Shame). The film, Troy.

X-posted, but not across the entire planet). Post a new comment.

On the Mysteries: elaion
http://elaion.livejournal.com/1479.html
Argued that we cannot recreate the Mysteries and should not try. Since they're cracking down at work on net access, I wrote something of a reply over my lunch break. The Mysteries seem to originate in periods of social flux and uncertainty that undermined the normal community oriented religion. As the article on the Mysteries and the Hellenistic Age which I posted below, and Nietzsche argues (in The Twilight of the Idols. Meanwhile, in Judaea, the Prophets make a similar Ethical Revolution in Yahwism, wi...

The reason for Kouretes Mysteries: elaion

Scott the part time Viking (. Scott the part time Viking. The reason for Kouretes Mysteries. This is an editied version of something I posted in. Journal. I post it here for all(or more) people to see. In light of the recent essay on reviving the mysteries. I should explain why I am interested in creating new "mysteries" inspired by the Kouretes. The Kouretes seem to embody something I think is needed. More on that in a moment. I think most people get to hung up on the word mysteries. I don't think t...

"Pagan Pentacostalism": elaion
http://elaion.livejournal.com/1036.html
For reading enjoyment, discussion, etc. Posted recently on Hellenic Recons by Mike, also viewable at: http:/ www.templeofdemeter.com/pentecos. Until recently, I've avoided most Hellenic email lists, for the simple matter that I have no stomach for watching the same topics go around on an endless six-monthly carousel. A few weeks ago, I joined one ‘online thiasos', and began grinding my teeth at the barrage of emails on ‘suggestions for developing a relationship with God X'. Environment of mostly American...

A partial response to kallistos and others: elaion
http://elaion.livejournal.com/2715.html
A partial response to. We speak of reconstructing ancient religions. What does that mean exactly? Religion in the ancient sense is a euphemism we use to describe a complex web of related cults conducted across a variety of social levels. These cults of the ancient world can not be fully appreciated outside the particular social level in which they operated. Any attempt to reconstruct those cults would have to consider the relevance of a social level’s circumstances to our modern world. The Mysteries, as ...
