Snakes

http://www.karenmcintyre.com/snakes.htm

Insights From Morton High. June 13, 1995. I believe that is all the emergency equipment in town! The snake that had seemed to me to be six feet long, turned out to be a 2 foot bull snake. "What do you want me to do with this Ms. Mc? Willis said, with a devilish grin which told me that he was going to enjoy relating this story to his high school friends as soon as he got back to town! Oh, Willis, just put it out in the field" I said with a red face. Return to Karen's Columns. Return to Karen's Homepage.

Going to the Dogs

http://www.karenmcintyre.com/going_to_the_dogs.htm

Insights from Morton High. Goin' to the Dogs. When she came to her senses she had a puzzled and embarrassed expression in her eyes. She was used to our station wagon and was operating under the assumption that I was inviting her to go for a ride in OUR CAR. She didn't bother to assess the new information that presented itself, but simply believed that things don't change- a dangerous assumption for a dog or a person. It will not be enough to simply provide information. It is of equal importance to ga...

Persistence

http://www.karenmcintyre.com/persistence.htm

Insights from Morton High. I was never happier over any grade! Another treasured memory is the vision of Mr. McGregor running with a fire extinguisher in hand toward a flaming excelsior projectile from one of my failed experiments. It provided one of the few moments of levity in his class. Return to Karen's Columns. Return to Karen's Homepage.

Words

http://www.karenmcintyre.com/words.htm

Insights from Morton High. July 12, 1994. Words, Words, Words. The room is quiet. Several students sit at tables taking the writing section of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills Test (TAAS) I'm proctoring the exam. The state of Texas requires all its high school students to pass the TAAS in order to graduate from High School. I can hear the air conditioner and the occasional sound of a student erasing what they've written.as they're engaged in creating an essay. For they are all dead!

graveyard peaches

http://www.karenmcintyre.com/graveyard_peaches.htm

Insights from Morton High. One of the last books I read aloud to my mother before she died was Graveyard Peaches by Celeste De Blasis. It was a special delight, not only because Celeste is s fine wordsmith, but because the book is about people we knew and places that were home. Celeste was four or five years ahead of me in school, and her family were pillars of the community where I grew up. In many ways, Morton is like Victorville when Celeste and I were growing up. Smaller, of course, but with a sk...

Musings of a school librarian about life, cyberlife, school, reading, literacy, education, and our need to be a community, working toward shared educational and cultural goals. Sunday, March 30, 2014. The car directly in front of mine was a luxury SUV. Next to it sat a large Starbucks cup neatly set down and left for someone else to pick up. Ah.my first green act! Musings of a school librarian about life, cyberlife, school, reading, literacy, education, and our need to be a community, working toward shared educational and cultural goals. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Singers come from around the Southeastern U.S. to Junaluska, N.C. every fall. This beautiful spot nestled in the mountains near Asheville is awash with the hues of fall for Choir Weekend. All of this to say, the heresy of our age is not technology, but our failure to use it wisely! Samuel stood at the...

Musings of a school librarian about life, cyberlife, school, reading, literacy, education, and our need to be a community, working toward shared educational and cultural goals. Sunday, April 20, 2014. Do Butterflies have ears? And other GREEN Questions. But that wouldn't have answered her real question. What she really wanted to know was do they hear? As is often the case in science the answer is complex. The caterpillars ignored most sounds but there was a narrow band of frequencies that caused them to ...

Given elaborate names - constructed. Names so spectacular that no one could utter them. They speak strength, beauty and awe.

Water from the rocks. Numbers 20:11. Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff and water gushed out and the community and their livestock drank."
