Karen's thoughts on the world

Karen's thoughts on the world. Sunday, July 3, 2016. The Centenary of the Somme. 'And when they asked us". (Kern). As a one off, I have decided to record my thoughts and feelings with regard to the Anniversary Service at the Theipval Memorial site. This is not s rugby related post, even though like many sportsman in the First World War lost their lives. These quiet villages were populated with people who came out to wave to us, they haven't forgotten, but I think the change to see William and Kate was th...

Karen's thoughts on the world: September 2011

http://karensthoughtsontheworld.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Karen's thoughts on the world. Tuesday, September 27, 2011. 23rd Sept – Wuthering Heights. From Balcutha – famous for its concrete bridge and very little else ( and no picturesque in into Dunedin as it was foggy until we got there. ). WE stopped off partway round at Larnach castle, a Victorian folly. The mist was still swirling around the top, which made it feel eerily like a Hammer Horror film set. Reading the history of the place, the owner had 3 wives and outlived the lot. One died suddenly overni...

Karen's thoughts on the world: July 2013

Karen's thoughts on the world. Sunday, July 14, 2013. 7th July - Take me home, Country Roads - Olivia Newton John (of course - she's an Aussie! Jaded is the understatement. Why did i think it was a good idea, to see the blue Mountains on the day after the last test? On the final morning I felt sad. I don't know if life will give me the money/opportunity to revisit Australia, so I walked round to Mrs Macquairie's to say goodbye and thank you. 1 Nicest story I heard: An old man with a younger companion - y...

http://karensthoughtsontheworld.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Karen's thoughts on the world. Friday, July 22, 2011. 21st July - Start. Possibly, but with a great deal of personal sacrifice and second jobs for all. (And my dad was of a generation when a daughter's role was to get married.) Would I at that time taken on debt? At that time probably not, as I was brought up to only lend money for a house. So I probably wouldn't have gone, and missed a fantastic life changing opportunity, which was the point Ed Hill made. Start - The Jam - ironically was in the charts w...

Karen's thoughts on the world: Sex is on Fire - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Karen's thoughts on the world. Sunday, April 26, 2015. Sex is on Fire - Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Rugby has always had a connection to the Armed Forces, and on the nearest weekend to St George's Day, the chosen charity was Help For Heroes. Both the forces and rugby share similar values, fighting for each other, comradeship, body on the line. Main difference is that rugby doesn't get sent into life threatening situations by their spineless leaders. The guy next to me said, ' why did we change from black?

Karen's Thoughtful Wanderings

Monday, July 29, 2013. A morning walk had this scene. One of my writing spots (pic courtesy of Karen Szymusiak). Another habit that I've already begun to work on is when a topic comes to me, writing it down as close to that moment as possible, and capturing as many details as I can before they elude me, and then find myself asking, "What did I want to say here? One of my 3 affirmations to guide me as a writer. I am really looking forward to establishing this habit of writing response group. After that sn...

Wednesday, 5 December 2007. Just another quick post to show yesterdays page. Yesterday was all about the perfect Christmas. For me Christmas is always sparkly which is why I added the glitter. Think it might have been too much though. I rushed and the glue didn't come out evenly. Monday, 3 December 2007. Just a quick post to show yesterdays Christmas journal page. It was about Christmas cards. I took the front of one of the cards I made this year to decorate it. I like it because it doesn't just show you...

karen threads of hope

Karen threads of hope. Saturday, 1 October 2011. It is difficult to speak of generous leadership. Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back." (Luke 6:38, NRSV). How can we ensure that we "pack" everything we have to give into our relationships with the people we serve? How might we practice generosity in a period of recessionary angst? In a recent conversation with som...
