In the Boat With Vivian: Lingerie of the 1930's
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2012/10/lingerie-of-1930s_2.html
Tuesday, October 2, 2012. Lingerie of the 1930's. Brassieres were finally available to the general public in the 1930's. Corsets were becoming less popular. The earliest versions of the bra prior to 1930 didn't much resemble the bra you see here. They were huge and restrictive and looked very hot and uncomfortable. Underwear was more like tap pants than what we think of as panties. Bras were unstructured. These garments shimmering in satin and silks and trimmed with lace were very pretty. We are all in t...

In the Boat With Vivian: Porches
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2012/09/porches.html
Thursday, September 20, 2012. Back in the days when people didn't have cable TV with hundreds of channels, lap tops, and video games, porches used to be an important part of a home. They were places to sit and visit when the house was too hot. I remember sitting on my grandparent's porch in rockers like these. When most homes didn't have air conditioning, this was a place to breathe, rest, and have a glass of iced tea. It was also a place where peas were shelled, corn shucked, and children played. We are...

In the Boat With Vivian: What to Do When You Need A Large Recipe Card File
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2014/06/what-to-do-when-you-need-large-recipe.html
Friday, June 13, 2014. What to Do When You Need A Large Recipe Card File. I love to cook and over the years, my cook book selection has grown to be quite large. We recently moved and I realized it was time to do some paring down. (There is nothing like a move to let you see how much junk you've accumulated! A piece of black craft foam in my craft stash was just the solution needed to level off the bottom. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We are all in the same boat. When the economy gets rough and...

In the Boat With Vivian: Yo-Yo's and Pearls
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2013/10/yo-yos-and-pearls.html
Monday, October 14, 2013. This is made from a heavy cotton fabric. Since most yo-yo's are made in colors, I thought it would be fun to use a solid and make them look dressy. Thicker fabric makes a larger hole in the center of each one. My intention was to find black faceted beads to put in the center. I looked several places and struck out. That's when I saw these big pearls. What do you think? The zipper pull has a black cord and a big pearl dangling off it. Labels: Sewing and Crafts. Homes of the 1930s.

In the Boat With Vivian: Home Keeping Recipes
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2013/09/home-keeping-recipes.html
Thursday, September 26, 2013. A few months ago I was in an airport and spied this gorgeous book. It had blank pages and the design on the front is William Morris, a particular favorite of mine. The book is small and I couldn't resist. It sat on the book shelf for a while. I knew it had a special purpose, but I hadn't yet determined what that would be. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In the Boat With Vivian: Why Wear a Slip?
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2013/08/why-wear-slip.html
Saturday, August 31, 2013. Why Wear a Slip? The past several years have seen the decline in ladies wearing slips and stockings. It used to be that women wouldn't dream of going outside the house in a skirt without them. Now I know the economy is bad, but back during the war years when nylon wasn't available for frivolous things like stockings, women drew lines down the back of their legs to give the impression they were wearing them anyway. Why should you wear a slip? Labels: How our grand parents did it.

In the Boat With Vivian: Coping in the Modern World
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2014/01/coping-in-modern-world.html
Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Coping in the Modern World. As a Christian, I believe we should help people and would have a hard time charging someone to do something like vacuuming. Where are her friends, family members, and neighbors? They said. "You stopped and pulled us out of the ditch." He remembered them and said hello. "We were so impressed by how people are around here that we moved here! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We are all in the same boat. When the economy gets rough and it's time ...

In the Boat With Vivian: Living with Organization
http://intheboatwithvivian.blogspot.com/2014/01/living-with-organization.html
Thursday, January 2, 2014. It's that time of year again, when the frenzy of cleaning and home organization articles start. Everywhere you look are photos of perfectly organized homes with coordinating colors in baskets, hooks, pegboards, and gorgeous containers. Each one looks like a shelf at Bed Bath and Beyond. I put it on the wrong shelf just to have it out of sight and pretty soon the whole system is shot. Life goes on, no matter how clean or dirty your home is and the really important things are the...
