Time in Cambodia

During 2008-2009 I spent about a year in Cambodia teaching English to University students. Sunday, July 19, 2009. Back in the US. Traveling through Bangkok was exciting and the trip back to the States was smooth, though very long. This week will be fairly busy and then I'll head home and be very busy as I join the preparations for Tom's (my younger brother) wedding on August 1! Wednesday, July 8, 2009. This is one correct response that I received from one of my top students. Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Time in Cambodia: February 2009

During 2008-2009 I spent about a year in Cambodia teaching English to University students. Thursday, February 26, 2009. In the middle of February RUA had its semester break. After administering exams I took off for some travel time with my parents! They came to visit for just under two weeks. It was a wonderful mixing of blessings for me as I got to travel, spend time with my parents and have two extra people to help me with my grading. :). Tuesday, February 10, 2009. I've been working with this girl throughout the process. She chose a topic that seemed straightforward, but starting running into some problems. Cook-ing in Cambodia: June 2009

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 29, 2009. One of the things I will miss about Cambodia is that even if you have a less than exciting day, your still in Cambodia with little surprises around every corner. Then something moved on the roof of the small warehouse next to our house. I thought, guessing this was the creature whose yowling makes me cringe. But then I noticed its unusually long tail. And long limbs. And face. It was a small, pale monkey! I have never seen a monkey anywhere in Phnom. Monday, June 8, 2009. And I am ...

Cook-ing in Cambodia: A village

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009/07/village.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2009. This sign says you are in Kroviek village. Its a tiny community at the base of a few small mountains, way way off the main roads. I visited Kroviek in March to talk with villagers about their history and experiences with LWF Cambodia. Paints a picture of how it all works. Hey rachel - this is great! I LOVE IT (granted it took like 30 minutes to download the file, but it was totally worth it). way to go LWF superstar! July 8, 2009 at 1:43 AM. July 10, 2009 at 10:02 AM.

Cook-ing in Cambodia: September 2008

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 24, 2008. The chirper in the wall. In this sometimes bewildering environment, I appreciate the small successes more and more. I am thankful for the tiny kindnesses and interactions that make Cambodia beautiful. Even odd and mildly annoying surprises increase my affection for this place. It scurried over to the kitchen and helped itself to the water in one of our ant traps (plastic bowls of water under the legs of the cabinet to keep ants out of food). I doubt Mark Twain had catching ...

Cook-ing in Cambodia: January 2009

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 27, 2009. This is why I'm hot. Oh the cold season in Cambodia. What a tease! A few weeks of blissfully cool weather (in the high 70s) and then it is all snatched away. I was enjoying sleeping under a blanket at night without a fan and wearing hoodies to work in the morning. But then, on Friday, I sat on the back of a moto on the way home from work and caught myself pouting as I began to sweat. Good-bye blanket, farewell hoodies. Number of Space Crowns: 1. Cook-ing in Cambodia: July 2009

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Oh so corny but I couldn't resist using this title for this blog. I feel like I am doing the Cambodian hustle; the race around Phnom Penh to pick up stuff, drop off stuff and tie up those straggling ends of my life here. So we close with another favorite quote by Rainer Maria Rilke. It kind of perfectly sums up everything. The more I see, the more I wonder, the less I know. What a mystery and blessing that is. Thank God! Tuesday, July 7, 2009. One of the things I love about LWF ...

Cook-ing in Cambodia: March 2009

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 19, 2009. Adventures of a Peep. Once upon a time, packed snugly in a box, a group of peeps traveled from Idaho to Cambodia. It was a long journey across the Pacific Ocean to get to Phnom Penh. After they arrived, most of the peeps were content to sit in the box, waiting to be devoured. But one little peep was curious. It wanted to see Cambodia. So it hoped out of the box and ventured into the LWF office. The little peep quickly made friends around the office. Vutha held it. I am a design ...

Cook-ing in Cambodia: April 2009

http://cook-ingincambodia.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 20, 2009. April is the hottest month in Cambodia. Meaning 100 degrees, humidity, buckets of sweat, multiple showers a day, dust everywhere and trees heavy with gorgeous yellow blossoms. However, April is coming with an unseasonal twist this year, heavy rains. The communications office of LWF Cambodia moved last month from upstairs to a room adjacent to the main building. Today we are experiencing rain in our new office for the first time. Saturday, April 4, 2009. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, October 22, 2008. This post is long overdue (as the staff workshop actually happened in the second week of October). But hey, to be cliche, better late than never. I am the only volunteer with LWF Cambodia and was the only new foreign face. T the retreat. I am amazed by how large the staff is! Sunday, October 12, 2008. Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa all in nine days! Crazy travel but a lot of fun. Here are some photos of a wonderful trip with old and new friends. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Every day is a winding road. Raid does not kill maggots. Monday, May 11, 2009. On the road again. I know, cliche title but couldn't resist it as I will be spending at least ten hours in a mini bus tomorrow. This week marks holiday # 3,432,233 and # 3,432,234 of my time in Cambodia. Just kidding. But really, it will be my 20th and 21st official holiday. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Every day is a winding road. On the road again. Cambodia. Bring It. Leaves from a Lutheran notebook.

An African Adventure...

Bringing Help and Hope to Lesotho. Tuesday, December 3, 2013. This entry has nothing to do with my time in Africa and may not make complete sense to my non-horsey friends, but feel free to read on anyways. The bond between a horse and their person is truly a unique one, and I needed to express and process my grief, and I have found that one of the most therapeutic ways for me to do that is in writing. I will always love you, Char Char, and I will carry you with me, in my heart and soul. Who will I marry?

Karin in Deutschland | A journal and documentation of my senior year abroad in Germany!

October 17, 2012 · 9:19 pm. It’s been about 3 months since I left Germany, although it simultaneously feels like 2 weeks and and a year. I gave up the idea of making a final blog post long ago, but I recently had a change a heart and decided that maybe a little closure on my year abroad would be best. Reunited and it felt so good*. My host family definitely bonded with my parents. We stayed with my mom’s childhood friend who now lives in Zürich, which was such a treat. My sister and dad enjoying the view.
