Karis' Adventures in "Real Life"

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life". Sunday, June 23, 2013. Rest in Peace, Chan. For a long time I just sat on the other end of the phone completely unable to form words or thoughts, and then it sort of hit me and I spent the next hour and a half bawling and reading tributes to her on Facebook. I still don't really believe it, though. Thursday, March 21, 2013. Greetings (and Realizations) from Vanuatu. Why hello, there! And what should my next big adventure be? And with that, I am going to stop moping and w...

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life": October 2012

http://www.karisinreallife.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life". Thursday, October 18, 2012. So Much. Work. Sorry I haven't posted for a while. My life of late looks like this: go to Job #1, eat lunch while driving to Job #2, do Job #2, come home, eat dinner, study for GREs and/or research graduate schools, go to sleep, repeat until Saturday, visit Alexander in Beloit, then start again. Helping, I feel winter depression creeping up on me. I need to get out of the Midwest). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life": June 2012

http://www.karisinreallife.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life". Tuesday, June 26, 2012. So, long time no update. Life has been pretty good of late. I have more friends in the area, polo is going well and taking up a lot of my time. Alexander is in Boston which is lame, but we've done the long distance summer thing before and I'm going to visit him in less than two weeks! The loneliness will be worth it" in which case my reaction is "but but but EVERYONE I know will be so far away. For YEARS. I can't do that! And now I have to get rea...

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life": Graduate School and Growing Up

http://www.karisinreallife.blogspot.com/2012/12/graduate-school-and-growing-up.html

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life". Monday, December 10, 2012. Graduate School and Growing Up. To be entirely honest, I'm frankly shocked that I have gotten here. I mean, I worked really hard, I have essentially been working three jobs for months, first studying for the GREs and then researching and applying to grad schools. Every step of the way I've waffled and debated "Is this what I want right now? Is this what I should be doing? That would be terrible! Of course, I could always do something completely...

Karis' Adventures in "Real Life". Friday, September 28, 2012. Of Weddings and Wonderful Friends. domestiCaited: The Native Seeds

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-native-seeds.html

Sunday, December 7, 2014. Several weeks ago I promised a list of the seeds that I have planted in the yard to overwinter. Here it finally is! This is the front bed with the bags of soil. 22 species total, with a little variety in heights, blooming time, and sun requirements. There are a few that I'm really excited about. Doll's Eyes. They're weird. That's all the reason I need. Prairie Smoke, which I think is beautiful. It should add a nice splash of pink to the yard. Coneflower (probably pale purple).

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2015/05/2015-updated-yard-plant-list.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. 2015 Updated Yard Plant List. The 2015 growing season is in full swing! There's been a lot of changes in the yard and I wanted to have an updated plant list. I'll work on a map later this season, but here's the new list! Prairie Plants = 52. Four types of aster (new england, aromatic). Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus. False Aster - boltonia asteroides. Queen of the Prairie. Shade Plants = 21. Illinois Prairie Rose (Rosa setigera). Shrubby St. John's Wort. And then the food plants!

Sunday, June 21, 2015. Stewardship and Ethics in the Home Garden. This is a difficult post for me to write, because it's both self-critical and centering around controversial native landscape ethics. Yes, such a topic does exist, and is constantly evolving due to the "science" of restoration and issues of colonialism and sovereignty. There's a lot you can read about it on a large scale but for me the question is - how do stewardship and ethics apply to the home garden? As you can see in my yard list.

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 9, 2012. I should explain before anything else that I have two rules for my yard, that make design more challenging but incredibly satisfying. Every I plant has to either be:. 1) Native to central Illinois. 2) Used in food production. Here's a drawing of the yard as it is today, after our first six months here:. Next, I worked out where I hope the yard will be at the end of 2013 a year from now. Page from facebook and transform our yard. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ken Albala's Food Rant.

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 23, 2012. These seedlings have just been full of surprises. It's been five days and all but one type of seed (the Rosemary) has sprouted. The Lavender only has a few up, but it's at least something. Everything else has already become a monster. It's actually inconvenient, since I started seeds because I wanted it to take a while. All the packets said germination would take 2-3 weeks! I mean, look at how big they are. Some are already in the 4-5 inches range. What monsters! Successful - so a...

Tuesday, December 31, 2013. A 2013 Yard Retrospective. Well, hello there readers! It's been over a year since I updated this, for good reason as you know. So we'll start out with an obligatory picture of the nursery, for record-keeping's sake. It matches the domesticated theme, after all. The Sanctuary of Evie B. The reason I wanted to post, though, was to reflect on the progress we made in the yard during 2013. When I left you in December 2012, this was the way the yard looked. Due to a very generous co...

Sunday, May 20, 2012. This post was actually prompted by the husband, who as soon as we were done with planting and photographing this afternoon said "you're gonna write a post about this right? In all fairness to him, he was pretty instrumental in this next step for our little garden. It expanded rather nicely today. Here's a close-up of the back of a leaf, with three little wrigglers hanging out and chomping on my broccoli. And a couple more eggs. I'll have to do some research and figure out wh...It's ...

INLS 758 - International Perspectives

INLS 758 - International Perspectives. Sunday, November 19, 2006. Is such an interesting area. This is one area of the world that I have never really given much thought to and have never really had any desire to visit, but after reading this week about this region all that has changed. I was very enthralled by all the unique things about. Including its libraries and landscape/ecosystems. Have some really unique features. The static libraries are also quite interesting. I would enjoy visiting and seeing t...
