50/50: On fate
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2015/03/on-fate.html
One should only be right half the time. Thursday, March 12, 2015. The hero is the one fated to be the hero and who follows that destiny. Most though take detours of some sort or another, and sometimes, those detours can get you killed. Especially if you are laying exhausted on the beach with a huge gold bracelet around your arm. 50/50: Virgin Spring: Trigger Warning
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/09/virgin-spring-trigger-warning.html
One should only be right half the time. Monday, September 22, 2014. Virgin Spring: Trigger Warning. One exception to this is the film I will be showing next month, Ingmar Bergman's. It is a stretch to consider this a Viking film, of course, since it is set in the early medieval period, but since Sweden was still transitioning to Christianity at that time, I think it fits within the rubric of Viking film. Plus it is nice to see just one film that has complexity and symbolism and good acting. I'm also remi...

50/50: Openness
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2015/02/openness.html
One should only be right half the time. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Just now I had cold pizza for breakfast, which I understand is completely un-Icelandic. In other words, the perfect follow up to an Icelandic book, in my wacky little brain. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. I would greatly prefer it if the Icelanders that visit my site and want to comment do so in Icelandic. . The author can be reached on Google Plus. Other Blogs for Iceland-Obsessed Foreigners. 50/50: Icelandic Lyrics: The West Wind
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/06/icelandic-lyrics-west-wind.html
One should only be right half the time. Sunday, June 8, 2014. Icelandic Lyrics: The West Wind. Here is one, not so hard to understand anyhow, but amazingly beautiful, that seemed appropriate for my poor neglected blog. Þú, sem, þegar vorar,. Og hjúpi grænum sveipar,. Hefirðu, vestanvindur,. Hefirðu of hafið spánska. Heitan munað mér færa. Kinnrjóðrar, er þú hézt mér? Sótta ég koss þinnar kæru. Kinnrjóðrar, er ég hét þér,. Bar ég hann blár yfir unnir. Hið bjarta loft í gegnum,. Þó máttu því ei reiðast,.

50/50: November 2014
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2015/03/november-2014.html
One should only be right half the time. Sunday, March 1, 2015. So, I changed my profile description yesterday, to reflect the fact that I no longer live in Iceland. Haven't actually since 2011, but I guess it took me a while to officially accept that. In fact, it wasn't until November of 2014 that it really sunk in. So that's why I've rather stopped blogging, since I don't really have much to say that fits the original intent of this blog. It does strike me however as really strange to not say anything a...

50/50: Ok glacier
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/10/ok-glacier.html
One should only be right half the time. Saturday, October 11, 2014. My wonderfully talented Icelandic artist friend Sigrun Lara Shanko was kind enough to agree to show her rugs at the Scandinavian Cultural Center. She takes features of the Icelandic landscape and turns them into rugs.check out her website shankorugs.com. I think they are stunning. Just now I'm on my way to see my son, literally. I'm in the airplane writing this. I remember when I was a kid, getting a postcard from my camp counsel...This ...

50/50: Taste of Iceland
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/08/taste-of-iceland.html
One should only be right half the time. Sunday, August 31, 2014. The job I have now is likely a continuation, and a reflection, of that choice. And although sometimes I regret not having the sort of pure academic position that leaves me time to write the next great treatise on the Viking Age, it does give me opportunity to reiterate my Icelandicness. 50/50: Escape artist
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/08/escape-artist.html
One should only be right half the time. Sunday, August 3, 2014. I guess this term comes from Harry Houdini, who made an art out of escaping. But this could be a false etymology. Like my brother was saying last night, we often mistake phrases for things that are of more recent history. The tv show American Slang gets stuff like that wrong all the time. I wonder if people who change jobs a lot are escape artists also. Or politicians and bankers who evade criminal prosecution. View my complete profile.

50/50: Teaching sagas to kids from China
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2013/08/teaching-sagas-to-kids-from-china.html
One should only be right half the time. Sunday, August 18, 2013. Teaching sagas to kids from China. As it turns out, my first shaky attempt to teach Laxdaela saga for Scandinavian 5 is also my last attempt to do so. I am leaving Berkeley, and joining the faculty at Pacific Lutheran University. There the student body makeup is very different, and I imagine most of the students I teach will be of Scandinavian descent. Whether or not they will sympathize with Guðrún however remains to be seen. I am a half-I...

50/50: Eins og 17 júni?
http://elisabethida.blogspot.com/2014/07/eins-og-17-juni.html
One should only be right half the time. Friday, July 4, 2014. Eins og 17 júni? Nevertheless, 17 juni here will of course never rival 17 juni in Iceland. But I've been enjoying touring around the Seattle area lately. It is nice to have a travel companion who enjoys car rides and going new places, and who helps pay things like ferry fees. Because to get around Puget Sound, you have to take a lot of ferries. That's one thing I have learned for sure. August 8, 2014 at 6:53 PM. August 10, 2014 at 4:10 AM.
