Madain Saleh or Al-Hijr is Saudi Arabia’s Petra, a stone-carved city and kingdom built by Nabateans. Crowned the best of this country’s 4,000 archaeological sites, it’s easy to understand why. Where I’ve Been. December 26, 2003. Most people come here on a booze cruise or to shop. I’m here for Junkanoo, Johnny cakes and conch fritters. Airport guards pull me aside at baggage claim on suspicion of being a terrorist because I’m only carrying snorkel gear and a carry-on of clothes and toiletries. Within 12 hours of landing, I learn that he could not wait for me to come home in three days and I’m now the oldest living person in my family. Created on a Mac.

Where I’ve Been. November 25, 2005. My time in Istanbul is too brief. A visit to the Grand Bazaar, a delicious bite of Turkish delight at Ali Muhiddin, and a tortuous look at everything I won’t have the opportunity to eat. I love the colorful lamps and bowls, dried fruit and intoxicating spices. Good thing I’m en route to somewhere else, or my luggage would be full and my wallet empty. One day I’ll be back with my best friend to see the city through his eyes. Created on a Mac.

Where I’ve Been. August 26, 2002. A weekend in Upstate New York to reconnect with a friend I met in California turns into a road trip to Canada, visiting Toronto and Niagara Falls. It starts to rain as I reach the Falls, which is of no consequence to tourists on a boat as they already look like huddled penguins in raincoats. A giant bear grabs me from behind, and the guy inside is lucky my reflexes are dulled or he might have lost his furry head. Later the sun comes out in time for a walk in the woods.
