Chromogram is a visualization technique for revealing patterns in a large sequence of text data. While working with Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viégas, we applied this technique to individuals’ contributions to Wikipedia. The first three letters of an article title or comment are respectively mapped to a hue, saturation, and brightness range, revealing patterns of editing and repeated tasks. Tangle is a simple gestural sketch that draws lines between the left and right hands of two participants. Lines follow participants hands in real time. Tangle was designed and developed as part of the Embodied Computation studio at RISD. Other studio members created physical objects and body wear to test with this application (and other similar applications). Classmate Er-ti Chen designed body wear to constrain movement while working with this space (see two-person sleeves below).

Move the cursor near a square to reveal its identity or reveal the identity of all squares and see how they change over time. Substrate grid is an updated version of an old sketch to incorporate multiple cursors via Oblong. Receives the data and uses it to control the data for a pointer. Multiple pointers can be added to an application if multiple phones are connected.

Mezzanine is a collaborative conference room product from Oblong Industries. That melds gestural interfaces, personal devices, and large scale displays. All participants can contribute and arrange content simultaneously through their laptops, mobile devices, or a gestural wand device. As the design lead for Mezzanine, I contributed to product’s visual design and user experience design across multiple platforms. On the technical side, I prototyped and wrote production code for the wand-driven interface.
