I was commissioned to do a series of paintings for a dental practice in Dalbeattie - Birch Valley Dental Clinic - so called because Dalbeattie means the vale of the birches. Land -C - r. A Clipping Good Time. North Ronaldsay, Orkney, has an ancient breed of sheep which are kept on the seaward side of the island by a 13 mile long stone dyke. Their diet is seaweed. This flavours the meat and is an Orkney delicacy. These unique sheep inspired me to make a flock with fleece made from. Seaweed. Seaweed has been used to make shampoo. I linked the seaweed eating sheep to the shampoo industry by installing them in a hairdressing salon. Finishing off with a blow dry.

Land -C - r. A Clipping Good Time. Sp of seaweed grow in deep water off the coast of Orkney. Locally they are known as tangles. They are thrown up by high tides from november to march. Tangles were gathered and dried on dykes known as steethes before onward transport by boat to a factory at Girvan. Processing at Girvan ceased in 1998 due to the high cost of transport and processing in Scotland. It was cheaper to do this in Norway. Designed by Free CSS Templates. The juxtaposition of the sheep and the kelp gatherer on the cliff top at Badbea is a poignant reminder of the sheep driving the crofters out of their homes.
