le passage: Two weeks later
http://alafrancaisespring2010.blogspot.com/2010/11/two-weeks-later.html
Monday, November 8, 2010. Ps It's been awhile since I've posted any nice pictures for your edification. Here's one I really like of the RER station at what must be Étoile in Paris. Right now it's the background on my computer for reasons I might explain at some point in the near future. Pps I just came across this video from Paris this spring of my dear friend Ryan and I dancing outside the Musée d'Orsay. Our theme song was "Through Heaven's Eyes" from The Prince of Egypt. http://alafrancaisespring2010.blogspot.com/2010/10/more-memory-this-time-wearing-footie.html
Monday, October 25, 2010. More memory, this time wearing footie pajamas. Right now I'm thinking a lot about memory, familiarity, and nostalgia. I am still processing all the theory going on behind this, but here are a couple memories that have resurfaced in the last couple days, for a myriad of reasons. 1) When I was a petite gamine. My dad created a cycle of stories he used to tell about two little girls, Gracie and Grossy. Anyone read "William Wilson". You were never a little girl! Or "I like Michael!

Friday, May 7, 2010. On Tuesday, our group took a train out to the town of Chartres, about an hour outside of Paris. Exploring all these old Gothic churches makes me so glad I got to learn a bit about the architecture from Dr. Hurlbut (and yes, I know I mentioned him two posts ago, but he really is just such a superb professor I'm sure references will keep coming up). After lunch, we headed over to the cathedral, officially called Notre-Dame de Chartres because it was (and I guess still is! Also, credit ...

Sunday, August 29, 2010. This is the start of something new. A new semester, a new job, a new house, a new ward, new friends (and of course, lots of good old ones, too! New shoes and cardigans. I'm ready for a breath of fresh air - a chance to remake myself, even if it's a little bit at a time. But before I launch into all this new stuff, let's recap a little bit of the old. Here are two photos I really like:. As the francophones call it). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Picture Win...

le passage: bones
http://alafrancaisespring2010.blogspot.com/2010/10/bones.html
Friday, October 22, 2010. I've got a couple bones to pick with you. I'm going to preface this post by saying that I almost always regret decisions I make in the middle of the night, and deciding to create this post might end up as one of them, but maybe the ideas I want to get out have less sting than I estimate in my insomnia. Hope I can stay lucid long enough to get these out. That's pretty broad. And I don't have an issue with the concept of the existence. But this week, my friend Will made a couple c...

le passage: January 2011
http://glstephenson.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 31, 2011. The intellectual movement everyone seems to love to hate. And (b) the standards for what qualifies as "elite" and "popular" seem, with close examination, more than a little arbitrary. So postmodernism steps in to declare the end of hard-and-fast highbrow and lowbrow categories. Lots of postmodern works aim to be "nobrow," meaning they purposely mingle the cultural divisions we've taken at face value for so long. Think of the first track on Alicia Keys' Songs in A Minor. Today wa...

And, don't tell Joseph McCarthy (or the Tea Party or my politicalphilosophy professor) but I actually kind of liked it. Or liked parts of it.
