the moral of the story...

Tuesday, May 5, 2015. On choosing the light. I despise getting in trouble. I always have. In first grade, I got my name in the "bad box" and haven't forgotten it since. I made a mistake today. And got in trouble. Actually, I make mistakes all the time. And I seem to hate myself for some time after…wishing I could take it back…hoping the other person understands and forgives me…wanting to crawl under a rock and cry my eyes out. I don't like disappointing others or myself. But being an adult is hard. It's ...

the moral of the story...: January 2014

http://katie-themoralofthestory.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 26, 2014. Woody Allen is a little strange to me. Yet, I think he hit the nail on the head when he declared that "Ninety percent of life is showing up.". Yep, I agree. It's the truth. And the truth? It will set you free. People are busy. We have schedules. We have plans. {God laughs at our plans at times I'm sure}. We have business. And we have busy-ness. Well, then you know they are part of your people. And you know they are awesome. Today was Open House. My sista. She showed up. ...My fr...

http://katie-themoralofthestory.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-sweet-spot.html

Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Time and time again I have written and said that teaching is such a gift.that the best days are the ordinary ones. And so we enter the last stretch of this year.and my absolute favorite time. I know my kids now. I know what motivates them and what frustrates them. I know how to make them laugh {be self-deprecating}.I know what they value most.surprises {a Winn-Dixie party} and visitors {everyone has a story}. I push a little bit more. I challenge them to step up a little more.

the moral of the story...: April 2014

Friday, April 11, 2014. My grace of the day…. A year ago Sunday was April 13, 2013. One of my favorite days ever. Etched in my mind. And my heart. I went hiking in Muir Woods. And it was full of grace. And I can never go back to that kind of sunshine and beauty. It was but a moment in time, although the memories bring me joy and comfort…because. But it is spring now and today? A tree bloomed in our classroom. How do I know what I should do? How do I change? How do I let Him call me by name? That's the mo...

http://katie-themoralofthestory.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-wait-and-see-garden.html

Sunday, March 8, 2015. My thumb is not green. {Thankfully, it's not blue or pink either.} I've tried hard in the past to give myself a green thumb, but then again I have killed more than three dozen house plants that I've received as teacher gifts over the past five years. My mom, the saint, always swoops in when the leaves are crunchy and revives them all. Most of my plants live with her now. I couldn't cut it. Or rather grow it. She was born with a green thumb. I don't think so. But I hope so. And then...

the moral of the story...: December 2013

http://katie-themoralofthestory.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 3, 2013. 8230;was such a good day. We moved seats. And what a difference it made. They gel. They own their groups. They named them after quadrilaterals and polygons. We played the name game. And Mr. Play-by-the-Rules did a voice. No one will understand that sentence except for me. And my students who celebrated with me after he made up a "voice" for his turn in the song. We read Because of Winn-Dixie. My kids are mesmerized. It is that good. The magic of the school year. Garden Patch: December 2012

http://www.gardenpatchadventures.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Thankful, Grateful, Blessed, the Works. Well, it's the day after Christmas and I am just now getting around to posting pictures from Thanksgiving. This is what happens in December. Pictures and posts are replaced with trees and decorations and I wouldn't have it any other way. So it will take me a few days to get my Christmas reflections in order, but my Thanksgiving thoughts are more than ready. As is tradition, we celebrated Thanksgiving Day at my parents' house. And the purchase of our best tree yet!

Garden Patch: The Best Ride

http://www.gardenpatchadventures.com/2013/06/the-best-ride.html

It's 6:50 am on my first day of summer. I should clearly be a. asleep or b. if awake, luxuriating in the idea of not working for the next eight weeks. But the truth is, I woke up with knots in my stomach. I miss my students. I have spent more time with these kids over the past two years. Than with anyone else. There will undoubtedly be a great void in my heart and my life for weeks to come. This group of students is literally the best ever. And so, so helpful. They love to learn. They love my stories.

Garden Patch: The Big 3-Woah

http://www.gardenpatchadventures.com/2013/04/the-big-3-woah.html

Written 4.9.13). So two days ago I turned 30. And after months of anxiety about how it would feel, it came, it went, and I conquered it :). It sounds so weird. In the past two days no one has asked me how old I am. And for all I know, when it happens, I will pull one of those 'cough as I say the number' type deals so they can't understand me. But right this second I am so full of the joy that is still overflowing from this weekend, that there is simply no room for anything else. How cool is that? House w...

Garden Patch: Baked Brie Stuffed with Craisins and Pecans!

http://www.gardenpatchadventures.com/2010/12/baked-brie-stuffed-with-craisins-and.html

Baked Brie Stuffed with Craisins and Pecans! Ok- let's get down to business. You guys have GOT to make this brie. Extravaganza for all of your upcoming holiday parties. It is one of my (very few) specialties because it's relatively quick and easy to make, and it is an absolute crowd. As in I'm not sure my family and friends would still come over if I didn't make it. But seriously, it's. 1/2 cup cranberry relish. 1 egg, beaten and mixed with 1/4 cup water to make an egg wash. Cookie cutters of your choice.

The Big, Brown Lawn: October 2012

http://bigbrownlawn.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

The Big, Brown Lawn. It might just be why we are here. Monday, October 01, 2012. My response to the woman leaving Dos Coyotes on Saturday who asked with a smile, "Is it Halloween already? One day is not enough for costumes! I grinned, spreading the joy. When we got back the kids jumped on the swings and flew. This past weekend I realized how I miss our hammock. I need it. Darn squirrels, nibble, nibble. Nevermind, I told myself I would write in the positive. I told the kids I needed a few minutes to do s...

The Big, Brown Lawn. It might just be why we are here. Saturday, November 10, 2012. Yesterday we got up, packed our bags, ate breakfast with Daddy, and then took off on our mini-vacation getaway. The kids and I on our way. Today we set out on an adventure. We drove west and as Grandma said, "We're almost at the ocean." It was decided. Our "NOW" was the ocean. Nothing would stop us. The wind? Mommy follow Mason's footprints," Ellie called. Hair by Windy Day. Hangin' with my bro. Sand stuck to your feet?

The Big, Brown Lawn. It might just be why we are here. Monday, September 24, 2012. When I miss the opportunities to write, I try to hold onto that feeling, relive it in my mind, let it dance and play and stay a while in hopes that even if I can't go back and reread the words I chose to capture it, or gaze at the amateur photo I took, I can call it back to mind again. We love to buy flowers at the farmer's market. Ellie insists on putting them in her room. First day of Kindergarten, my boy is all grown up!

I just discovered this unfinished draft.it was inspired by hearing the Glen Phillips song "I Don't Need Anything That I Don't Have" one night while making dinner. I think I will share it in its unfinished state. PS I am still practicing with my new camera and will share some pics soon. I Don't Need Anything That I Don't Have". Baby chicks are fun to hold. Katie the Fake Ginger. Friday, June 21, 2013. Oooops. I almost forgot MEANING. I thought I had already written this. must have dreamt it or something! I really enjoyed the various stations the Meaning group had us go through because each station emphasized different ways of making or finding meaning. Katie Thomas - Concrete / Textile / Design -. Some people hate concrete. They feel the need to cover it up with bright colours and inject a sense of joy to contrast the utter grey misery of raw cast concrete. I face quite a challenge: To sway the hatters of concrete and see the potential beauty of grey… I am certainly not covering up for the negative impacts concrete can have… Another challenge…. Concrete Repetition. Joy to the eyes! End of the year shows Tactility Factory. Cast Woodcrete Bench Tops.
