D'mba mask, Baga, Southern Senegal, wood. Carved by the Baga peoples near Guinea this mask represents a strong mature woman. This piece can be very large requiring a strong man to dance it at a masquerade. Some D'mba masks reach seven feet tall. Monica Blackmun Visona et al.,. A History of Art in. Carved by the Dogon peoples of Mali this piece titled “Primordial Couple” has many stylistic characteristics of the Dogon peoples including: elongated neck and torso, abstracted facial features, and scarification. Having an important belief of continuity in many African cultures this couple is a great example of just that. The human spouse will spe...

Fertility Objects - Women of Africa

http://katiecongerartsofafrica.weebly.com/fertility-objects.html

Stylistically one can see the popular abstracted features including almond shaped eyes and elongated necks. Carved from wood the figures depicted stand with arms at their sides with un-proportioned body parts. A woman is seen as blessed if she produces twins as with a single child. These figures show that a woman was able to have twins showing that she is very fertile. Although these figures are not prayed over in order to promote fertility they do show that a woman was very fertile. Made by the Bamana p...

Arts of Africa 2011. This is Dr. Sutton's Arts of Africa Blog. Sunday, October 16, 2011. Comments on Haitian art blogs. Generally, I was glad to see so many thoughtful posts. It's always rewarding as a teacher to see students reconsider prior beliefs and conceptions of what they thought they knew after processing new information. I was also impressed last week with more students providing each other with helpfully critical comments on the blog posts. Keep that up! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
