Telling Stories

Wednesday, March 14, 2018. Book Review: Little Fires Everywhere. Celeste Ng's first novel, Everything I Never Told You. Blew me away. It would have been hard for Little Fires Everywhere. To top it, and it didn't, but it was still enjoyable and thoughtful and impressive in so many ways. I saw Ng at the Tucson Festival of Books this past weekend where she discussed this novel, which is being made into a TV show. Little Fires Everywhere is set in the nineties in Shaker Heights - an affluent, planned communi...

Telling Stories: January 2015

http://katieorourke.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 11, 2015. Book Review: The Invisible Circus. I loved Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad, so I had high hopes for The Invisible Circus. Again, this is very well-written in a microscopic sense. The sentences are beautiful. But the larger story fell apart for me. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Click to find me on facebook. Telling Stories: November 2014

http://katieorourke.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 15, 2014. Book Review: The State of Me. Nasim Marie Jafry's debut novel. Reads more like memoir, depicting a fifteen year period in the life a woman diagnosed with ME, a condition which also affects the author. Diagnosed in the '80s, Helen Fleet must deal with a medical community that knows so little about her condition that it's often dismissed as psychosomatic. While this book does a good job challenging that idea, it didn't feel bogged down with medical information. Surprisingly, th...

Telling Stories: Stop supporting sweat shops

http://katieorourke.blogspot.com/2015/05/stop-supporting-sweat-shops.html

Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Stop supporting sweat shops. My most recent blog post about this got the least amount of traffic. I think it's a subject that makes people uncomfortable. They don't want to think about it. So let's talk about it again. The reason sweat shops exist is that corporations are greedy and the reason they get away with it is that consumers are greedy. I explained how to search for US made products on Amazon and wait for them to go on sale. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). All content...

Telling Stories: Be the Change

http://katieorourke.blogspot.com/2015/05/be-change.html

Monday, May 4, 2015. I've found it's gotten really hard to buy clothing manufactured in this country. We don't really make anything here anymore. See, there are laws that keep companies from exploiting American workers so those corporations get around it by firing American workers and exploiting workers in foreign countries instead. And for some reason, we're still allowed to buy those products. We try not to think about it when we see a $2 shirt. Last week, John Oliver tackled this issue. View my comple...

Telling Stories: Book Club Contest

http://katieorourke.blogspot.com/2015/04/book-club-contest.html

Friday, April 24, 2015. Book clubs are fantastic. They get people reading. Sometimes they give people a night away from kids and responsibilities. Maybe they're a way to socialize and connect with your community. Why do you love your book club? Send me a tweet @katieorourke78 (or post a comment here). And whoever has the best answer (ie: my favorite) will win free copies of my new book, A Long Thaw, for every member of their book club. (I'm thinking between 5 to 10 members, but I'm flexible.). Then had t...

| Katie O'Rourke

Author of contemporary women's fiction. Tucson, Arizona is a place for runaways. Everyone you meet here came from somewhere else and has a story about what they left behind. Blood and Water tells these stories in five alternating first-person narratives: a young mother named Ally, the deliberately childless Tim and Sara, single dad David with a college-bound daughter and David’s little sister, Delilah, who shows up on his doorstep with a secret. This collection of short stories is about young women negot...
