I see this tension in attempts to reduce the complexity of the world to representations, in a sense, to diagram life. These representations are often educational tools, such as charts in a textbook, or displays at museums or zoos. I am interested in the limits of these representations.

This is a series of photographs I have been taking at zoos and aquariums. These images depict empty exhibits, highlighting the artificial landscapes they present, and piquing questions about unseen animals that inhabit them.

These pieces are part of a project in which I mapped the undulating motions of jellyfish and other sea creatures using a video effect called motion tracking. Motion tracking allows you to create a motion path based on the location of a chosen point within your video image as it moves over the duration of the clip. By applying a paint effect to the resulting path, I generated a kind of tracing. Jellyfish Tracing (red spotted). 50 seconds in duration.

This series of photographs diagrams the parts of fake plants- from fabric leaves to price tags- as though they were botanical specimens. These images reference the format of traditional herbaria: collections of pressed plants mounted on paper used by botanists and other scientists as reference material.

In this video projection, a baboon peers out of a window, surveying the world around him. His expressive features encourage passers-by to consider what the animal is responding to and why, and to compare these responses to their own visceral experiences of being alive. This piece was installed in the window of Melville House Publishers as part of the 2008 Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival in Brooklyn, New York.
