Homesteading in Hawaii

Wednesday, January 11, 2017. I liked the woodsy effect that the crooked tree branches made at the back entrance of the house, so it wasn't long before my mind started thinking of other spots to use the idea. Well, I think I've gone overboard, but I can always remove some if that proves to be the case. This is the back steps. The stairs going down the hillside seemed the perfect spot to add tree branches. And why not jazz up the bridge going over the fish pond? Tuesday, January 10, 2017. A bout of twisty ...

Homesteading in Hawaii: More Tales of Zero Waste

http://kaufarmer.blogspot.com/2016/12/more-tales-of-zero-waste.html

Tuesday, December 27, 2016. More Tales of Zero Waste. I just snagged two five gallons buckets down at the dump. Someone had thrown them away. Whoa, I'm not one to let a useable bucket slip past my fingers. So with the aid of a long stick, I hooked these babies and slipped them into the bed of my truck. I have no problem whatsoever using such buckets. In fact, self draining buckets can be a plus! I put these two right to work helping to haul soil and compost. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Homesteading in Hawaii: September 2016

http://kaufarmer.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 30, 2016. Not Everything Wants to Grow on my Farm. One thing that I've noticed recently is that there's plenty of advice on how to grow various crops that really aren't suited to one's climate or location. How to grow coffee indoors. Growing citrus trees in giant pots which are moved indoors during the winter. Greenhouse production of tomatoes. Poly tunnels for winter lettuce. Crop production in extreme deserts. Even how to keep chickens producing eggs during freezing, dark winters.

Homesteading in Hawaii: Concrete Pathways Finished!

http://kaufarmer.blogspot.com/2017/01/concrete-pathways-finished.html

Tuesday, January 10, 2017. It's been a long haul, but the concrete pathway project is complete! The path now circumnavigates the house, has a branch off going to the driveway, one to the solar system shed, and one to the hillside stairs. Pretty cool, if I do say so myself. This is the final section. So no more slippery spots when walking around the house. By the way, Crusty and the cats really like the new path. They prefer it over walking on the dirt. Ha-ha, so do I! Homesteading in Hawaii: April 2016

http://kaufarmer.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 30, 2016. Improving Soil - My #3 Method. So far I've told you about two ways I start out improving my soil. But I also discovered a third way. Mulch. (Just about everyone has mentioned mulch in response to my first two posts about improving soil. Smart gardeners! Compared to the first two methods for improving soil.compost and planting sweet potatoes.mulching can be a bit trickier. Problems can develop. The top mistakes I've made? Remedy: laboriously remove all that slimy, real heavy muck...

Joe's Garden Journal: August 2013

http://wholeviewfarm.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

A one acre, permaculture based, homestead dream. Sunday, August 4, 2013. Our Amish paste tomatoes are just beginning to ripen. Our front hugel beet. Is doing quite well. There will still be food that goes into the compost simply because we didn't find time to prepare it. It is well worth the slight losses we experience considering all the benefits they bring. They fertilize, till and manage pests and disease for me, so that I can relax and simply enjoy the abundance. Is it the new location? I also enjoy ...

A one acre, permaculture based, homestead dream. Friday, September 27, 2013. I'm fixing a hole, where the rain gets in. And stops my mind from wandering.". We started a little project back in the beginning of July, replacing two failing cinder block foundation walls on the house. Ahhh. the joys of owning a 161 year old house. Every project turns out to be about 10 times more difficult than I anticipate. I managed to help her get the job done. That I built for them. A variety of different plants have germ...
