Scree Shark: April 2011
http://screeshark.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 21, 2011. The crust hadn't set up many places yet. I knew there was some in the Russian Lakes Area from a trip I was on the weekend prior. This trip was a mix of crust on groomed trails, variable off-trail crust, and great crust on Lower Russian Lake. Not perfect conditions, but it was great to start enjoying the short crust season! A little bit of glaciation on the Russian Lakes Trail. Prescribed burn area to provide moose with denser vegetation for browsing in the future. I explored the...

Sunday, February 5, 2012. 02/03-05/12 The powder hut is sweet! But don't tell anyone. I first heard about this cabin two weeks ago from a co-worker. I'm familiar with most of the walk-in cabins in South-central Alaska, so why hadn't I heard of this one? The three of us headed out from the Tram parking lot at 4pm. It had snowed over a foot since the cats left in the morning! The riding was great the next day. It was another meter powder day (albeit breezy)! The next morning the winds really picked up and ...

Sunday, October 28, 2012. 10/27/12 Mount Monarch (7108'). The bikes didn't save much time, but the short ways we could ride helped us get to the summit earlier. This gave us more time to navigate some critical sections with some light. In the summer much of this (ATV) trail would be very muddy and unpleasant to hike or bike on. If you can look past that it's beautiful country. Nice section of the Pinochle Creek Trail. First look at Mount Monarch. Descending to Hicks Creek. Heading up the scree. The Photo...

Saturday, July 14, 2012. 6/19/12 Packrafting Eagle River - Briggs Bridge to JBER. Http:/ www.jber.isportsman.net/. Labels: Chugach State Park. 6/13/12 Packrafting Glacier Creek. I headed to Glacier Creek, with the meetup group this time. I knew the run and tried to hit all the waves, so there was no butt-scraping or getting hung up on rocks this time. We hiked in from the hotel and ended at the airport. It was a good hike to avoid a car shuttle. 0.68 kcfs/26.39 ft. Labels: Chugach National Forest. 5/31/1...

Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Wednesday, Sept 5th - Headed to Homer for the day and we mainly just visited Homer Spit. We left a dollar hanging at the Salty Dawg Saloon and walked up and down the boardwalk and the beach. Nice town. Thursday, Sept 6th - We chartered a wildlife tour with Epic Charters out of Whittier ( http:/ www.epicchartersalaska.com/. So I got my video camera out and spotted that it was actually a beaver moving a tree to it's house. HA HA! Sunday, Sept 9th - We finished the rest of the D...

Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Denver, Colorado August 2012. A few months ago I found out that the Wal-Mart managers meeting would be held in Denver this year instead of Dallas. Immediately I knew I needed fly in early to spend some time in the backcountry. I thought to myself.who on earth would meet me? This trip was amazing and it's something we totally need to do every year! Trish thank you so much for joining me! Your friendship means so much and I loved every minute of our trip! Sunday, August 21, 2011. 06/18/11 Four Mile Creek Circumnavigation. Heading towards Mount Eklutna. Bold Peak looks like it's mock-erupting today! Wide open ridge-walking on our way to Peak 4040. Heading to Peak 5505. The glider looks like it's running into Steve's head. When we were on the summit of Peak 5505 we saw a couple gliders. One made several passes near us. It was pretty amazing seeing one so close flying almost silently. We could hear the displaced air as it flew 50 feet above us! The trees on ...

Scree Shark: December 2011

Saturday, December 3, 2011. 09/30-10/02/11 Caines Head Cabins. I try to plan trips to a public-use cabin a couple time a few times a year, and this year everyone wanted to go. There were eleven of us total! Enough people to rent two cabins. There aren't many places with two cabins near each other, but I thought the Derby Cove and Callisto Canyon Cabins would be close enough. That didn't turn out to be true. Oh, and it rained the whole time. Shaun lighting the way. Chris crossing a log on Tonsina Creek.

Sunday, September 25, 2011. 09/18/11 Bleak (5430') and Bright (5745'). The plan for the weekend was to head up Camp Robber and Grey Jay Peaks. The weather forecast looked like it might be rainy towards Girdwood, so Tami and I agreed on Bleak and Bright. Peaks that neither of us had been up before. Rumble, Bee's Heaven, and Thunderbird Peaks. Tami trying not to blink in the bright morning sunlight. Rehydrating before the ridgewalking,. Toe of the rock glacier. Flank of the rock glacier. We headed down scr...
