What I Learned from Pottermore – K Callard

https://kcallard.wordpress.com/2015/07/30/what-i-learned-from-pottermore

Journey of a Children's Writer. July 30, 2015. December 2, 2015. What I Learned from Pottermore. All right, I admit it. I’m addicted to Pottermore.com. And since tomorrow is Harry Potter’s birthday, I thought it would be a good time to post this. And do you know what I learned (aside from the fact that maybe video games aren’t as horrible as I’d always believed)? JK Rowling is the Queen of Backstory. I’m not kidding you. I mean, I wrote about the intricacies of her worldbuilding already, in this post.

FAQ – K Callard

https://kcallard.wordpress.com/faq

Journey of a Children's Writer. What does the K stand for? K is short for Kimberly. I tried going by Kimberly for a while, but everyone insisted on shortening it to “Kim.” These days, everyone I know pretty much calls me K or Kaye. You can call me either of those, or Kimberly, but not Kim*. And definitely not Kimmy. Seriously. Don’t call me Kimmy. Special dispensation allowed to people who’ve known me more than 15 years. How do you pronounce your last name? Can I order one of your cakes? I’m a mast...

Leave ’em Wanting More – K Callard

https://kcallard.wordpress.com/2015/06/18/query-synopses

Journey of a Children's Writer. June 18, 2015. December 2, 2015. Leave ’em Wanting More. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about queries. Giving the tips and tricks I learned from the 3 years of querying that led to signing with my agent (yes, from a cold query! Today, I thought I’d post about what I find to be the hardest part of the query: the synopsis. By Mary Kole, over on her kidlit blog.). 8221; “Bake them a cake.” “Faint.”). But most of all, I think every good query synopsis should contain the ...

Care Bears Party – Keeping Kids…

https://keepingkids.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/care-bears-party

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. We tend to keep birthday parties pretty low key around here – no renting halls, inviting the whole class, or spending eleventy billion hours shopping for loot bags. But my kids know they can count on three things: a fancy cake (I love cake decorating! The cake was a bit bigger than this, but I edited the photo to remove my daughter’s name). Pin the Tummy on the Care...

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. https://keepingkids.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/granola-recipe

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. You’re getting a two-for-one deal in today’s post. Not only will I post my healthy, breakfast-practically-every-morning granola recipe, but I’ll also post my Nut-Free, School-Friendly recipe that I make during the school year (actually, I usually split the recipe, and make half for me and half for the kids). 1/2 cup sesame seeds. 1/2 cup sunflower seeds. Preheat ove...

Dragon Birthday Party – Keeping Kids…

https://keepingkids.wordpress.com/2015/08/17/dragon-birthday-party

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. Who doesn’t love dragons? My (twin) boys like them so much it was the obvious choice for their birthday theme. As I’ve mentioned before, we tend to keep birthdays simple, giving them an awesome birthday cake, customized game, and fun party favor to fit their theme. This picture of the heads on plates cracks me up. Finally came the party favors. I put more work t...

How fucking old am I? | The Bloggess

http://thebloggess.com/2015/07/how-fucking-old-am-i

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. How fucking old am I? July 31, 2015. A friend of mine gave me a high school graduation picture of her daughter and it was lovely but you wouldn’t have known it was a graduation picture if it didn’t have that written at the bottom of the picture, and I was like, “. Do they not wear fur coats in graduation pictures any more. 8221; and then she looked at me like I was insane. Is this not a thing any more? Me in the 90’s. My hair was actually very small for Texas. Sorry thi...

Window Art – Keeping Kids…

https://keepingkids.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/window-art

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. I did this craft last year with my kids, using their names, and they still have them up in their windows. This year I tried it again with a butterfly silhouette and the word Imagine. Personally, I think the names/words work better because there’s more black space, but try it out and do what you like best. Different color tissue paper, cut or torn into small pieces.

Wild Animal Day – Keeping Kids…

https://keepingkids.wordpress.com/2015/08/04/wild-animal-day

Fed, entertained, healthy, happy – you name it! This blog covers one creative mama's attempts at keeping her kids all of the above and more. Sorry this post is late, I forgot yesterday was Monday, what with it being a holiday up here, and all. -K. All right, looks like it’s time for another theme day. As I mentioned in my last post, theme days are a great way to break up the monotony of summer vacation. I find it takes very little to entertain the kids and renew their interest in old toys. Walk in forest...
