Best of Blogs Part 3. Leave a comment ». I found all of these blogs on Time Magazine’s 25 Best Blogs of 2009. It was fun to see that some of the blogs I have chosen to review already (and my classmates) were on Time’s list of both best blogs and most overrated. The list was great and I added some to my favorites that weren’t public affairs but will be fun to check out later. My favorite entry in the blog was this:. Phil Spector convicted of second-degree murder. People have nicknamed these early visitors...

Editorial Plus - Thomas King. Embracing beer as writing fodder since January 2009! Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Best of Blogs: Liberal Gibberish. I did my best to find some interesting conservative blogs - you know, that weren't overtly racist - but I guess I will have to achieve that goal next time. I just cherry-picked the top of the Top 100 Blogs e-mail from Professor Thelen. 1: The Huffington Post. It's a liberal orgasm. 2: The Daily Kos. 3: The Daily Dish. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Editorial Plus - Thomas King: Troxlophilia

Editorial Plus - Thomas King. Embracing beer as writing fodder since January 2009! Monday, February 16, 2009. We've all come to appreciate disclaimers. They protect us from the side effects of our dear products - like a suggestion to wear dark pants while on certain medication. Sound advice. Howard Troxler seems to be a fan of the put-words-in-their-mouth tactic. And in "Stop, Thief, or Else I'll Quote Statistics! These are all around great columns. And he makes some fantastic arguments that smack of...

This week I'm proudly throwing up my nerd flag. These are the gamer "blogs" that I find myself checking out. Be brave and explore a little and you might find some good humor at the very least. PS Their newest update: "The Way of All Flesh" is at least partially relevant to what we do in class. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Best of Blogs Part 3.

Mears on the future of journalism | Labit
https://christinelabit.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/mears-on-the-future-of-journalism
Mears on the future of journalism. Leave a comment ». Pulitzer Prize winner Walter Mears is relaxed in his chair. He and Thelen are dressed similarly, both in casual pants, boating shoes and striped shirts. It is quite obvious that Mears has had time to vacation while visiting Florida because his sunburn outlines a pair of sunglasses. His short gray hair is parted to the side and he wears a simple gold wedding band and leather-strapped watch. There used to be an assumption: If reporters tell the story pe...

Fennelly: sports writer and so much more. Leave a comment ». I won’t call someone an idiot, Martin Fennelly said, but I will describe a situation that makes the reader think what an idiot. Martin Fennelly has worked at the Tampa Tribune for 18 years. He is a sports writer. Taking people to task can be fun, he said, but it’s not my strength. During his time speaking to the class, Fennelly discussed many different books about writers and journalists. He seems to love everything about the job. I have seen s...

Archive for January 2009. Goudreau: Writing for the Community. Leave a comment ». Although Rosemary Goudreau has a background in reporting, she placed less emphasis on it than Vickie Chachere. In fact, she warned against becoming caught up in reporting rather than sharing an informed opinion. Goudreau said that People do not like to be told what to think. They must be convinced. She said that if an editorial has an informed opinion and is convincing, people can read it and decide whether they agree or not.

Troxler Passionately Discusses Column Writing. Leave a comment ». As Howard Troxler discussed column writing, he sat perched on atop a stool and looked each student in the eye from behind his black rimmed glasses. According to professor Thelen, Troxler is the best columnist in the area. Thelen began by asking Troxler a few questions, to which Troxler responded with answers typical of an editorial or column writer: I want to be worth the readers’ time and make the issue accessible to the reader. My notes ...

Bob Ross on Criticism | Labit

Bob Ross on Criticism. Leave a comment ». Being a film critic was the ultimate good job, said Bob Ross. Film critic. Ross worked at the Tampa Tribune from 1985 until April 2007, after a reporting position in Bradenton and a job in a video shop. I loved it so much that I haven’t looked that hard for something else. To me, fact and opinion are all the same because [in a review] you need the background historical material, he said. He said he wants to write reviews that are not cookie cutter, that have some...
