Post-Expedition Musings III: Food. Paddle to eat, eat to paddle. For the third in my series of post-mortems on my 2-week kayak camping trip on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, I want to tackle the topic of food. It’s also the longest of all of these articles. Coincidence? Food fatigue = fueling failure. Poor planning produces peckish paddlers. And other alliterative aphorisms. Post-Expedition Musings II: Packing. This is a packing test for my 2-week Vancouver Island trip. Post-Expedition Musings I: Th...

Thursday, July 18, 2013. Nanook of the Nashwaak, Hal the Gullboy and myself have been talking about running this river for years but it has eluded us with water levels and schedules. This year everything seemed to line up in our favor and we went for it even though the water dropped but then the rain came and it all looked good. Here's my tale of running this river! May 17, 2013. May 18, 2013. Three Boats and Nanook. Just Enough Room for the Skinny Guy. Oh Scooter, look what I found! Loving my new chair!

Scooters Adventures: November 2012

Friday, November 16, 2012. I got a call from my friend who said a canoe had washed up on his landing on the Merrimack River and he didn't have the time or efforts to fix it up so wanted it gone. Did I want it? Well, I am a sucker for this sort of thing and of course said yes! Just what I need, yet another canoe! Speaking of the HIN here is what it looks like and I found it unique! I thought I needed new glasses when I first started looking at it! Ranger Otter, as is right now. It looks like either duct t...

Monday, December 30, 2013. The Adirondack Canoe Rebuild. December 26, 2013. As usual I swore I didn't need another boat to work on and once again swore off Craigslist just like I did the last time when I ended up with the Pamlico Barkolounger! I saw this canoe for sale and hemmed and hawed for a week or so and then made the call. The owner, Don, said that it had gotten blown off it's stand and taken a slide down the hill on his land bouncing off some rock walls on the way down. And what a hill it was!

Sunday, October 14, 2012. October 15, 2012. Why do I keep doing this? Another hull to fix! This time a kayak, I almost feel like it's sacrilege to have it in my shop! But ya know when it's free and almost new then I guess it's ok. This is a Hurricane Kayak which is a Thermomold design. Very light and looks very well built. Http:/ hurricaneaquasports.com/kayaks/santee116s.html. First off here are some pictures of the damage:. Major break on the bow. October 17, 2012. I needed to "pinch" the front end toge...

Saturday, February 11, 2012. Building the New Boom. Back in 1999 ol' Hal the Gullboy came up with a simple and effective sailing rig for our canoes in anticipation of our 400 mile trip. Of course the mast were not placed in the correct place but they worked beautifully! We used our poles for the mast and Hal "found" some nice lengths of bamboo for the booms, Bambooms! About half of the boom is now split. Sailing down the St. John River. This is how it looks under sail. Now this is an easy and straight fo...

Saturday, November 8, 2014. Making A Canoe Rudder. November 7, 2014. I have been dubbing around for years now on making a rudder for my canoes. My only successful one was and is for the Hogged Backed Saint, the Disco 158. It has the perfect decks and no tanks to deal with to make this all work. Way Too Long Rudder But Good Template. Using my skill saw and a new metal blade I cut out the new rudder. It certainly is nice to have a good jigsaw with some power and power cord that isn't broken! The main ingre...

Saturday, March 10, 2012. How Not To Portage A Canoe. A Few Years Back. It was a crappy day at work, the kind where I wished I had won the lottery all day long but I didn't. One wrong thing after another so I should have known better but some days I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Why do events like this happen so fast? Now I'm not a big guy and the canoe weighs probably half my weight if not more. I'm wiggling like a bastard to get the damned thing off of me! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, September 5, 2012. My First Malecite, A Quick Rehab. September 4/5, 2012. Unlike the decks bought from MR these will be flat and won't have any type of upward curve to them at the height and middle. Hell, a deck is a deck and don't do a whole lot besides hide what is under them. Tomorrow I'll ask if they can shave a sliver off and call it good. September 8, 2012. I spent the morning setting up the second gunwale with the dowels and G-Flex. I found that I needed to weight them down to keep ...

Sunday, August 2, 2015. End of the Trip. July 24, 2015. It was finally happening. The final push on our trip that we started fifteen years ago. We met at Cousins Island and loaded up a car for the drive to the putin at the boat ramp in Brunswick, ME. Our goal was to paddle back to Cousins following ancient canoe routes down the coast. Our goal for the day was to paddle out to Merrymeeting Bay and camp on Bird Island. Grinding out the mast thwart. Just ahead was another island that offered a much better s...
